empty the cats, because of bad quality Gas
empty the cats, because of bad quality Gas
Hello fellows,
i live in tunisia, and i have a 997.2 carrera 4S with pdk sport chrono plus, opening roof and bose.
i really love this car and i chose it without hesitation, after having done a porsche we in germany 3 years ago.
its a 2009 model
the problem i am having is that my father put some very bad quality gas in it and drove it for 300km, even if it was painful, and the engine was going worse..
i took it to porsche here, (a small garage, without a lot of experience), and they told me that by removing the cats they had no problem, even if they did not change the gas in the tank..
so they advised me to change them.
i am thinking that even if i change them which costs here 3500 $, i will have the same problem in the futur because of the same reason, so is there any solution?
They also told me that without the cats, it smells gas, is loud, and my car consums more gas..
Thanks again for your help, and bravo for your forum, i read very often the 997 and 991 sections

well, you only need to change cats if car now throws CEL error related to O2 sensors. cats only get destroyed usually if car backfires really badly and literally throws pure gasoline out so it contects cats metal and destroys them. if that does not happen and car does not have O2 sensors related CEL - leave cats alone.
do you have any CELs on the car now? if yes and your local shop has no PIWIS - try to use any ODB2 scanner available or buy durametric software.

if you used leaded gas then cats may indeed get choked but imho simply unbolt and knocking at them will not get lead out. if cats are chocked you will feel severe power degradation. technically speaking cats are needed for emissions control only.
if they are shot and there are no local regulations - put in cats bypass and put on software ECU tune to ignore O2 sensors signal and then you can run on leaded gas.

Hey,
thanks for your answers,
The porsche garage is a certified one,
they have emptied the left cat, cause apparently it was compltetely out of order. the right is not yet having the same big issue, but the guy told me that it may do it now or later.
the car is not having any errors now, even in the piwis, but the behaviour of the engine is not the greatest i ever known..
so you advise me to empty the right one, and then put on software ECU tune to ignore O2 sensors signal ? nothing else ?
i do not know how to do this programming, can any garage equipped with PIWIS do it ?
where do we find the procedure ?
sorry, a lot of questions, i am not used to being in such a position, and am very worried about my baby P
