Radar detector recommendation
#31
Obviously everyone has their own opinion. I can tell you I've owned the V1, custom install of the 9500ci (with laser jammer) and now the K40 360. The K40 blows the V1 and 9500ci away...again in my opinion.

Is the K40's laser jammer good enough? And is the K40 invisible to radar detector detectors and laser jammer detectors (if there is such a thing)?

I have the K40 in my car. Installed by the old owner. K40=CRAP!!!! Anyone one that owns it better get it tested before you EVER trust in it. Join a Radar forum. Most do LIDAR test once or twice a year. Even a LI system with a bad install get owned!! K40 just get owned from the get go.
Only reason K40 is pushed by dealers is the high margins. Ask any dealer to test it with you and see what answer you get.
Just my 2 cent and FIRST hand experience.

Hi Guys. I purchased a Valentine V1 a few months ago, and I really really like it. The capability to configure the detector and the arrows are huge bonus in my mind, and is the primary reason why I selected this model. I was also considering a laser jammer, however....
Was out to dinner a few nights ago, and it so happened that the guy sitting next to me was a Cali Highway Patrol Officer here in Los Angeles. We spent the whole evening talking cars, speeding, laser jamming, and overall tactics.
#1 - Jammers (vice detectors), such as the blinder are ILLEGAL in California and in many other states as mentioned by others in the thread. You'd better check the rules before you invest in this type of detection. For Cali:
Source: California Vehicle Code, Section 28150
(Also available from http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/
Jamming: Electronic Speed-Measuring Devices
28150. (a) No vehicle shall be equipped with any device that is designed for, or is capable of, jamming, scrambling, neutralizing, disabling, or otherwise interfering with radar, laser, or any other electronic device used by a law enforcement agency to measure the speed of moving objects.
(b) No person shall use, buy, possess, manufacture, sell, or otherwise distribute any device that is designed for jamming, scrambling, neutralizing, disabling, or otherwise interfering with radar, laser, or any other electronic device used by a law enforcement agency to measure the speed of moving objects.
(c) Except as provided in subdivision (d), a violation of subdivision (a) or (b) is an infraction.
(d) When a person possesses four or more devices in violation of subdivision (b), the person is guilty of a misdemeanor.
(e) Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a person who has a valid federal license for operating the devices described in this section may transport one or more of those devices if the license is carried in the vehicle transporting the device at all times when the device is being transported.
Added Sec. 1, Ch. 493, Stats. 1998. Effective January 1, 1999.
#2 - Don't be fooled by the laser 'detection' on any of the systems you are researching. If you are a lone bogie and targeted by a LEO with a LIDAR, you are done. Stop, pick up your ticket, and proceed to your next destination.
#3 - Further on the Freq Band/LIDAR topic, get smart on the systems the cops use where you live. There are some great threads here on 6speed, and other really good ones that link to other sites such as bimmer forum that go into great detail. Also of course are the radar/laser forums. Here in LA/So Cal, besides radar Ka (X and K are irrelevant), the cops use LTI Ultralytes. What I was told by my new friend is that tactics won't help employing a systems such as a blinder, you will get nailed. the LTI Ultralytes have a 'jammer' field on their display- if their display pick up a signal that they are being jammed, they WILL go after you even if you aren't speeding and can't pick up a reading. It's a $500 fine.
Get the V1 and drive smartly. About the only advice I can suggest.

FWIW, I highly recommend the 9500ci. One came with my c4s cab and I absolutely love it. The radar detector has saved my hide a few times and the GPS feature is great to avoid false alarms and for red light cameras. Can't say much about laser detection (its not a jammer), the few times it has gone off they have been obvious false alarms.
Having said that, given the price I am sure I would not have bought it and I only have it because it came with my p-car. I believe it is something like $2,500 installed. That is a lot of tickets to get a return on my investment.
Have never used a V1 or K40 so I can't really compare.

as a wise man once told me, so is speeding.

I have a V1 with Savvy and concealed display hardwired in my C4S Cab. I really like it now that I have programmed appropriately for city driving. The directional arrows and bogey counter are standout features. I use suction cups on the windshield mounted above the rv mirror; but I am always looking for a better mount. The suction cups seem to work fine in CA.
As mentioned already there is a lot of info on the various RadarDectection forums about what to buy and testing results for both RD and Lidar - just stay with a high end unit, otherwise skip the RD altogether and just use your eyes and brain (well use your eyes and brain even with a RD). If price is not an issue, the Beltronic STI-R Plus is extremely highly rated but will require installation much like the 9500ci from Escort. Some people use a Bel STI-R+ and the V1 in combo, they're hardcore!

I have 2 V1 for over...15+ years. Have saved me quite a few times. Love it! The nice thing with V1 is that, over time, you have the option of sending the unit back for upgrade for a nominal fee. They would swap you a new unit with the latest version of the software. Kind of a nice way of staying current. Yes, other newer detectors may have bells and whistles and cost a fortune. v1 is simple and functional and it has been proven over and over. It just works! Just my cents.

Being in the business for over 10 years I can shed some light on this thead.
First as mentioned some states do have radar and jamming laws:
http://www.bestradardetectors.net/Ra...ctor-Laws.html
Now, V1 is an excellent detector and if you drive mostly on the highways its a great detector. In the city because it lacks GPS filtering it can be very noisy and will go off when you pass every automatic door opener used on super markets and drug stores.
Others have mentioned the Escort 9500ci which is a great custom installed unit with GPS so it can mark and ignore all the false alerts and can also give you advanced warning for red light cameras and fixed speed cameras. However 9500ci was the king of installed units until Beltronics released the Beltronics Sti-R Plus which is almost identical to the 9500ci but it add's Band Segmentation which allows you remove certain frequencies from the scan which are not used for police radar which will make it scan quicker and eliminate false alerts.
I can go on in great detail if someone wants but for a custom installed unit I would definately go with the Beltronics Sti-R Plus, If you are mostly highway and want just a windshield mounted unit the V1 is good. If you will use it mostly in the city and want to ignore the false alerts take a look at the Escort 9500ix.

ZR4 is an OK laser jammer but there are others that are better. This is another reason why more people go with the Beltonics Sti-R Plus since you can buy it with or without shifters. Unlike the 9500ci where you are forced to pay for the shifters even if you decide you don't want to use them.
Laser Interceptor is currently the best laser jammer at the moment. Blinder has a brand new Jammer which is coming out shortly which will give the LI a run for its money since the LI currently can not jam the Laser Ally gun and the new Blinder claims it can. We are waiting patiently to get the new Blinder jammer and will test it as soon as we get them.
If this is a new remote Install I would definately go with the Beltronics Sti-R Plus over the 9500ci and either the LI Jammer or the new Blinder Jammer but I would wait a few weeks on the jammer to see how the new Blinder unit performs.
If you need pricing on anything let me know through a PM.

another question re: 9500ci laser: the front receivers:
do they need to be squarely facing the road AND not be recessed in the air duct ? mine is tucked in little bit so its not so visually obvious.. but is it reducing the effectiveness ? thx in adv
