Help, 2006 carrera s over heats in traffic

My 2006 carrera s over heats in traffic. I changed the water pump that sprung a leak and changed the thermostat. The car runs fine when moving but the temp goes up if im in traffic. As soon as I start moving up to speed the temp goes down to the proper temp. Could it be air in the system or something else I'm missing.

Have you checked your radiators for debris that may be blocking them.

Are the cooling fans working? It sounds like you only get cool air blowing past the radiators when your car is in motion.

I had a similar overheating problem, in stopped traffic only. The AC was blowing warm air. Car is fitted with center radiator and low temp thermostat also. Upon testing by my shop, no issues with the AC refrigerant or any trouble codes. Turned out that grounding out the nose over a curb pushed the fan shroud into the fan and kept it from running. Affected parts disassembled and put back to rights. Anytime a 997 indicates excessive coolant temperatures, it should be checked out.

Fans are going and no debris. Hit no curbs nothing bent. Like michaelL said the ac starts to blow warm air when stopped. I am stumped. Someone said maybe air in cooling system but find that hard to believe.

What are you using to measure / determine that the car is overheating?

Have you checked the coolant reservoir when the car is cold? If you have air in the system the level may be low.

I'm with brennan and spoodle. Explain your overheating. Does your coolant temp. light, light up? How are you measuring this? Check your radiator fans and make sure both are running. Make sure your coolant level is sufficient and you are running a proper mixture AND type of coolant. If you're thermostat and fans are working you should be fine. What temp and humidity are you driving in that you notice the problem? Is this new or a pre-existing condition? More information is needed. Thanks.

If I'm in traffic to long it will over heat and dashboard notification light will come on. Of coarse i shut off the car right away. I will not let it get that hot anymore. Afraid to take car anywhere unless on an open highway. Looks like its time to open my wallet to a porsche shop. In this hot weather, temp start rising rapidly in about 3 min of not moving. Car had full tuneup with coil pacs and all filters done 4 months ago. I here the 2 front fans kicking on and no debri in front of radiators. Also I did not have this problem in winter months. This is the first summer since buying the car.

If you changed your water pump, your coolant lines may be clogged with debris from the original leak or debris entered while they were open during repairs. As a result, the coolant circulation may be restricted; the additional airflow when in motion helps manage the temps, but at stand still, the air from the blowers is just not enough.

Also, are you sure your new water pump and thermostat are not defective? Did they refill the correct coolant in your car?

Just a Gump thought, is it possible to put the thermostat in backwards? (Never done one on a Pcar)

Thermostat goes only one way. Maybe white rock is on to something. Maybe a radiator is bad.

For reference, if it is the radiator the charge at the local Pcar dealership should be around $421 in parts and $375 in labor.
