Yeah, and it doesn't feel good. Funny/sad thing is that I called another dealer and they wanted around $1.4k. Guess it is the Fairfield County, CT markup!

do the water pump go bad this early? do I really need to change the water pump or could be the bolt that needs to be tightened up?
I wanted to hear form you guys what do you think?
Pretty common issue and the part costs $ 240 at Suncoast. Don't think I'd chance not replacing it considering the potential cost of a full blown water pump failure. What's your indy quoting you to do the work ?

There is a guy on Rennlist selling new Porsche 996/997 water pumps for $125. I picked one up just to store for when the time comes to replace. They are $350 or so on Pelican.

Make sure you have the pump checked for damage. The plastic propellers have been known to break apart and the pieces clog the oil galleys.

It is a common parts failure we see almost every other week at our shop (yes you read it right, that often). 20k-50k is where they fall at. No need to panic about it, it is a pretty easy fix.

If anyone interested in, I have Lasso pumps for $199.00 and Genuine ones for $260.00.

We charge around $670.00 for a replacement including coolant flush.

Mine failed this morning. Heard a squeaking noise, went to dealership. $1075. Three months out of warranty.

Is there a general consensus on water pump preventive maintenence for 997's? My old E39 and E46 BMWs each started life (as well as my current Audi Q5) with plastic impellers. BMW recommended 50k miles replacement on the pump. Are Porsches similar? Or do we just wait for the small drips on the garage floor? I never waited that long on my Bimmers. Early swaps for upgraded pumps. Audi pump failed at 1 year (recall item). Just thinking ahead for my 997.2.

Thanks, David

Yah I'm in the same boat. I have 06 with 42k miles, my mechanic says not to worry about it (was dry when he last worked on car 6 months ago). By reading these posts I get feeling that WP replacement is imminent

I'm sure you didn't mean oil galleys.

Normal. I replaced my pump due to dry seepage residue. Only $850 including part. Also replaced serpentine belt while the pump was being replaced.

Mine went at 80,000 miles. it just went and shot coolant all over the place on the road. Changed it myself. Was a little harder to do then I first thought.
