water pump failure?

Heard a strange rattling / ticking noise this am. Brought it into a mechanic they are saying its water pump at $950 replacement cost. Is that a fair value or look elsewhere? BTW this is not at the p dealer...

Car is '06 with 27K on odometer.

I think the part is around $300.00. Check Suncoast for pricing. They also need to do a good flush to make sure any blade/fin parts do get stuck in the engine.

I had a water pump failure covered under CPO last Fall. '06 C2S with similar mileage at the time for reference. There was coolant leaking everywhere and I had to get it towed to the dealer. Have you asked for a quote from them?

Becks european - getting it done there. Called a few other places was quoted higher prices, did not take it to dealer. I just thought it was extremely early for water pump failure to occur that early. I was not leaking but there was a rattle / chirping noise coming from the rear end, did not want any further surprises down the road. Sounded like a loose screw of something bouncing around in there --

Many have replace their pumps before 50K miles. Mine lasted around 50K. Indy should charge between $800 - $900 for the entire job. This is a normal maintenance item - albeit early.

A recent Excellence article recommended water pump replacement as a routine preventative service in M96 engines (986 and 996), but I forget what mileage interval was recommended. I don't know about M97 engines, though. I replaced the water pump in my 2001 986S at 107K miles (after reading the article) and the impeller blades were still OK. Peace of mind.
