Can't wait for the day when the insurance companies tap into them and use that data to set our premiums. Privacy is dead.

Voluntarily.

Wonder if the tattle-tail box shows up on a wiring diagram?

Makes having track insurance for DE's and such doubly important.

I think that info is only used when needed, like in a bad accident, not for an "unsafe start" tickets. LOL

X...

I've heard about this......I heard a story about a corvette that just left the dealership and crashed a few miles down the road....When they pulled the info from it it stated that he hit 143mph before it crashed.....

I know a guy who works in collision reconstruction for the police here in Toronto, and it is standard procedure if there is life threatening injuries or a death they download the data and use it at any criminal trial. Which I'm guessing would be available for civil lawsuits as well.

I think the Canadians turn the screw down a turn further than their US counter parts.

Didn't France do this several years ago. I seem to remember that if you were pulled over for a violation they could scan your car and add to your woes. It might have been a pilot program. Hope Obama of the Hood and his Merry Dems don't read this.

Black boxes in cars have been present since the first air bag/safety restraint systems appeared. They were used to collect data to diagnose accidental deployment or failure to deploy.

With more safety features: traction control, stability control, ABS, etc.; the block boxes have gotten more sophisticated and collect more data.

Some insurance companies are using these to gather driving behavior data and give the driver a choice to submit the data and possibly qualify for a lower rate than he is otherwise paying now. If he choses not to submit the data he pays the pre-agreed upon rate. if he choses to submit and he does not qualify he pays the pre-agreed upon rate.

In the event of an accident in which injury or death happens you can be sure either the attorney for the plaintiff or the defendant will request the data.

I think parts of Europe and in Russia if you have a rolling video camera on while you drive lowers your insurance rate ... just go on YouTube and search something like " russian driving compliations " ...no way that many Russian drivers just happen to have video cameras on.

I'm against any sort of monitoring or recording in the name of "safety" ...it's complete b.s. because in the first opportunity that this info can be twisted against you, it will.

Of course people raise the age old "If you're not doing anything wrong, there's nothing to worry about." ...those people can go back to living in **** Germany.
