high idle oil pressure.

Hey, I noticed my car doing something were. The engine is warm, and idle oil pressure is at 5. Pressure drops as I accelerate to 3 then at 3000 rpms its at 4. Pass 3000 rmps pressure is at 5. Is this normal?

Thanks

Yes, this is perfectly normal. The oil pressure in my car (2007 997.1 C2) is around 5 while warming up, once warm is around 1.5-1.7 at idle, and then around 3,000 rpm the pressure will be at ~ 5 and stays there up through the rev range.

Pretty much what my 2005 C2S does regarding oil pressure as well.

What I meant was the engine is hot (hwy driving for over an hour). The oil pressure is at 3 at 2000 rpms and 5 at 4000 rpms, which all seems normal. At red lights, from 4000 rpms to idle the pressure drops, which is again normal. Whats abnormal is after it drops to about 3, it goes back up to 5, but the whole time the car is idle. When I start accelerating from idle to 2000 rpms pressure drops from 5 to 3, then goes back up to 5 at 4000 rpms, from 4000 to idle to goes from 5 to 3, then back up to 5 while idle... weird

I assume you have a 997.1 because on a 997.2 that s not how mine acts. (and they are different engines).

Never thought the electric controlled oil pump made so much difference in our 997.2's

It is weird. Common sense will tell you that when engine fully wormed up, the lower rpms the lower oil pressure so at idle should be the lowest pressure from all rpm range. Very often oil pressure sending units or connectors on it goes bad. You can try to play with it. Its located in the engine compartment on a passenger side pretty deep inside.

Hot idle for .1 should be in 1.5 vicinity. Assume that is what you were used to. I would wonder about the gauge.

I couldnt tell if it was still doing it this morning (3 mile commute, not enough time for the engine to warm up), but i'll take a video of it if it does it again.

sounds like a gauge or sending unit issue. i know NOTHING about elecs so dumb question: when the pressure is low, is there less resistance/volts going thru the system? i.e. maybe it's a low resist/volt issue or something?

Mine has been doing the same thing (randomly). Have tried to determine a pattern but no luck yet; however, no issues with the car so haven't really worried about it.

When was the last time you had an oil and filter change? Pay attention to the gauge after the oil change.
