997 Reliability
Went from '06 C6 Z06 to a '07 997 C2S in 2009. CPO w/12K mi. when I bought. Put 18K mi. No warranty repairs. No issues. Pretty much scheduled service and oil changes. BTW, they are 2 completely different cars. The nod goes to the 997 as a daily driver.
While reliable there are some potential issues with IMS which is serious and RMS which is less so.
You may wish to research these issues before deciding what years to look at. My car did get a new engine under warranty for IMS.
Good luck and have fun searching.

Had my 997.2 for about 1 1/2 years, it's been more reliable than my mini, last 3 bmws, and audis before that. I had my S2000 for nearly 7 years and that never had a single issue, ever. So hopefully in 5 1/2 years I'll be saying the same about my 997.
Bought my 09 997.2 C2 w PDK new. Now at 50K miles and still going strong. Only issue was a minor leak in the sunroof area. Recently had the headlights polished and recoated since they were beginning to haze.
After I sold my 993 I ended up with a 2008 C6 and hated it! The only good thing was I got a good deal on my 2008 C2S Cab. My Carrera is a daily driver and I have put almost 30k miles on it in just under 2 years and the only issue has been tires.
Buy one, it's a different critter than the Corvette.

^haha - classic. Ya, I loved the vette actually and have had two. But they are NOT refined at all (horrible interior/seats/plastic-ness - basically the same interior as a chevy cruise). My most recent (2009) had great ride quality and was a good dd actually, but not possible to drive in the winter. Plus, the sound was incredible after some upgrades including exhaust.
I am a bit worried the C4s is not quick enough actually - but I guess you can tune them a bit to get some more power. I know they are quick around a track, but I like the feel of the straight line stuff too.

Which is why, although they dipped below $80K, I probably wouldn't get a ZR1. Sure it's a blast (more so than a Z06) and incredible bang for the buck, but it will be plagued by all the C6 Vette problems. The redneck/gold chain-chest wig/blue collar image thing doesn't bother me but having the car in the shop on the few days you want to drive it would.

You got my attention at replacing the engine! I guess that kind of stuff can happen to any car. I'm hoping that normal driving, consistent tuneups and oil changes etc will stave off any engine replacement issues.

Gotta go with yvesvidal on this I have a C4s it is in a word fast. It is way smother in its delivery of the power than a Vette. As I told the local constabulary here on LI this past August "Really? Didn't seem like I was going 115, are you sure?"
And it will flat out out handle a Vette cornering. As we used to say anybody can go fast going straight keep the speed up in the corners and I 'll be impressed.

I think the corner thing is probably out of date when it comes to z06 and zr1 corvettes. My understanding is that those things are very accomplished in those areas.
Not having driven one though cant really comment on it vis a vie the 911. The c4s is certainly not going to seem slow but if speed is a concern test drive one before you buy as only you will be able to judge that. A 997 Turbo is always another possibility if you need a bit more power and the engine in the MK.I Turbo didn't suffer from IMS issue either and looks set to be a future classic.

^ I was considering the 997tt, but a higher price tag and higher maintenance cost (I assume) is making me lean towards the c4s. I love the 997tt though, so maybe worth waiting a bit to get that over the c4s...
LOL. That's a great come back. Did they let you off or lower the ticked speed? Might be good to also ask them if they'd like get in and see it for themselves.
