New to Porsche..
Hi Guys,
I am really in love with the new 991 and 981 Cayman S. I come from the BMW world and currently drive a 2011 335 Sedan and have owned a 135 and a V8 540 etc. EDIT the 335 sedan is my wifes and we plan keeping it..
I am considering buying a new 981S and if I stretch my budget a 991. These cars are expensive as we know...I am concerned I may spend a lot of money and then perhaps find them too "rough"...for example I drove my cousins new 370Z and I didn't like too much..too rigid and not good for a DD and he said the drive in Porsche is very similar. He recommended a M3 Coupe. So I wanted to get opinions from current owners would you recommend
1. Buying a older 997 IE MY 2007/2008 to try out the brand first?
2. Jump right in BC there are GREAT DD's?
thx for your opinions!
PS I test drove them but it was very quick so I couldnt get a complete feeling...

In terms of the roughness this is going to come down in a large part to your preference and can only really be answered by taking the car on a test drive. The newer 991 and 981 from my understanding ride better and quieter than the equivalent 997 and 987.
In terms of practicality I could easily see how my 997 could be used as a daily driver. However my car an 07 is really a weekend only car for me so I am not the best person to answer this. I had a BMW before and really loved it but comparing it to the Porsche is quite difficult. The BMW was a great car and felt so much better to be in than my Audi but it still felt like a normal car. The Porsche however is a much larger experience. The thing make more noises gurgels, pops and rumbles and when you stop driving it and get out into your garage it just smells different to any other car I have owned.
Personally if I was going to purchase the car as a daily driver I would lean toward a newer 991 or 981 simply because it eliminates the headaches of dealing with older cars and makes the cost of ownership very clear. You pay your monthly and that's it. An older 997 will just by fact of its age require more maintenance work and hence be slightly more problematic to deal with on a daily basis. Of the 991 and 981 which to choose is a harder question. I think if the 991 is a financial stretch it probably isn't worth the headaches as the 981 will offer 99% of the same thrills without the same financial burden. If however you need rear seats and can afford it then you wont be unhappy with the 991.
I hope this at least partially answers your quesiton

I went from a 335i to a Cayman S and then bought my wife an M3 a few months later. I mainly daily drive my Cayman. My Cayman has PASM and the ride is smoother compared to the run flat equipped 335. The M3 handles much better than the 335, the big downside with that is the limited range due to poor gas mileage and small tank. The engine is a beast though.
If you don't need the rear seats, I'd get the new Cayman. If you're not tracking it, you'll probably be happy with the base Cayman, just get the options you need to make it a comfortable daily driver. For me, I wanted ventilated seats, XM/Sirius, upgraded stereo and PASM.
There have been some great residuals on 2 yr leases on the base 991s though, may be worth a consideration.

I sat in the Cayman S at the Geneva motor show. It was a beautiful car grey with coco leather. The new Cayman just works so well.
My only problem with the Cayman S is the Boxster S. Less money for the Boxster S and the ability to drop the top and while I completely trust motor journalists such as Chris Harris who just gives the nod to the Cayman my skills behind the wheel will never detect that .01 of a difference. Seriously difficult choice but what a great problem to have.

Many people the statement about residuals however can you clarify what that means? Is that the MF or what is due at the end?

thx for your responses guys!
My mum has the New Boxster S and trust me on this front I have never met someone who is more particular over her hair than that lady. She swears it is night and day better than the 987 she had before. Not been in the car yet myself as I live in US and she is in UK.
Not sure why Bluetooth is a problem in a cabriolet

I came from a E55 and a E92M3 coupe (had 2 335xi prior). I never regretted making my decision to jump ship. Whether it is a rough drive is open to interpretation. However, I was happy with the ride quality in my 997 to give up my Audi S4 daily driver. I find it more fun to go to work in the 997 4S than the boring S4. It helps me wake up when I hear the exhaust and the revs at 4:30 in the morning.
Looking at your situation, I think going to the 981 S is probably a better choice if you are worried about ride quality. The 991 and 981 have completely overhauled suspension components compared to prior generations, so they have much compliant rides than the 997. I was at the dealership yesterday and finding myself drooling over a white 981S.

MF=interest rate. Residual=depreciation charge. High residual=lower payments, higher buy-out at lease end. If you don't plan on buying the car, high residuals are good.
Get yourself a lease calculator for your phone or computer so you can work the numbers. Under the right settings, you can get a car that's much more MSRP for the same monthly charge.
