new tire handling question
new tire handling question
Just replaced two rear tires with factory N spec Pirelli s as the backs are worn. Fronts still good. Car has 11K on it and rear tires wore even. I have nt driven the car all winter so after I put the tires I took the car out for a 200 mile ride. It was 40F degrees.
Here s my question, the car seems to now have issue holding a straight direction and seems to hunt around. I don t remember this with my worn out rears when I put the car away.. I did nt have the car since new so this was my first replacement tires and I m not sure what I m feeling. Almost feels like the wind is blowing the car around esp at 50-80 MPH. Almost feels like the rears are pushing the car around with every variation in the road.
Could it be cold temps or tires need breaking in? Thoughts?
Dealer thought it might be temps... Thanks.

Cold temps effect summer tires. New tires do need to break in a little bit, but not more than 200 miles. You might need an alignment. I just got new Super Sports and an alignment. My car feels a little light in the wind too, so I think I want to get another alignment to reduce the toe.
tires are not directional but OUTSIDE marking is in the proper place.
Never heard of replacing all four when the front are in very good condition.
Dealer suggested (which I agree) no need to do an alignment as other tires worn fine.
Tires pressures set as door tag suggests, 37 42 if I remember correctly.
I ve been searching post and maybe I just need to let them settle in for some more miles?

Check the manual for the tire pressure under normal load
You're feeling the difference in tread depth front to back. New rears have more tread and will tend to squirm more compared to fromts. After 500 miles or so it should become less noticable. Have replaced rears only several times and have not had any issues once the rears are broken in a bit.

Disagree. Tread doesn't move on summer tires, especially at those low temps. Summer rubber is brick hard at that temp, which is why they don't grip. If the tread did move it would help generate more heat in the tire and the tire would actually grip better. Proper tire temperature (as Pirelli would have engineered in this case) is essential for optimal grip. As an aside, winter tires will actually out-grip summer tires at low temps. Why? Because the compound is so soft and the treads are designed in smaller blocks so they squirm and therefore generates the ideal temperature necessary to grip.
with the opinions posted it appears there is nothing I can FIX and it will settle itself in. Kinda disappointed to spend all that money to have liked the car better on worn out rear tires. At least when and if it corrects itself I will be able to help others in the future who experience this issue.

Point well taken, and I didn't notice the OP's location when I posted, but, if one assumes as I did (and one should never do that ) that the conditions the old and new tires where driven in where the same ( cold ) what would you attribute the sensation he was feeling with the new rubber on the back of the car ? Unless he's running tires from different manufactures/tread patterns front to back, which would also explain what he was feeling and should never be done in hot or cold conditions.
same brand tires, replaced with N spec. Original equipment tire. No other variables.
Just to clarify, I m not talking about the tire sliding (loosing grip),, just making the car darty (mainly at the rear). Thanks All.
