major cost savings on TPMS

So...about a month ago, my left front tire TPMS went out and created two glaring lights, fulltime, on the dash. I researched, via this forum, and decided that, since the car is over five years old, I might as well have all four sensors changed out. Called the local Porsche dealer: $1,000. Called the local independent P-car specialist: $900. Then, I saw a post pointing to a website ( http://www.oewheelsllc.com/TPMS-Sens...ssure-Sensor_2) for aftermarket sensors for $164 + shipping. Today, I had them installed at Discount Tire ($41), they synced within a mile, and for less than 25% of OEM, I was on my way. While factory parts are usually the way to go, please don't always drink the Koolaid.

He didn't say anything about the readings other than the new sensors synced. OEM $1,000 - he paid less than $250 hence the 25%.

Good job Rick!!

Can you replace the battery in the TPMS unit in each wheel? If they fail while under CPO are they covered? Thanks for the information.

No, they are sealed. Should be covered by CPO but only as they fail - 1 fails, 1 replaced not all 4.

Hit TPMS tab and then type in Porsche in the search window. They have them listed by model and year.

Another option is to disable TPMS entirely instead of replacing sensors. Durametric Pro can do this. Ask around at your local PCA to see who has one. Costs one six-pack and a thank you.

I actually thought about that, but local inspection laws (in Arizona, at least) require the TPMS to be operation for any vehicle newer than 2006. They check via the plug-in as part of the emissions test. Plus...for $200, why not keep it.

I had one go out and the TPC Inactive warning came on. I took it to the dealer and was told that it is not covered under CPO. They said that the computer showed that the remaining life on all of the sensors was zero, so the one that failed didn't fail any faster than the others. Therefore, it is a wear item and not a failure, so it is not covered.

I would have asked to see the readout - hard to believe that all 4 failed at the same time.
