Shifter Cable Fix??

Recently my shifter went very loose when trying to shift and car was stuck in first gear. My shop is telling me that the cable broke at the linkage and that the linkage didn't break. They are saying I need a whole new cable transmission control part, which involves lots of labor totalling about 800 bucks. I did some research here and everyone that had the same thing happen are saying it was just the linkage that broke and its an easy/cheap fix. Is it possible my cable itself did break???

Thanks.

I think the plastic fittings that attach the cables to the shifter are the things that typically break. If so, the shifter will be fine but you'll need to take apart the center console to replace the cables and there is probably some adjustment involved. Might be a good time to make the move to a short shift kit if you don't already have one.

I just replaced mine last weekend. It is not very hard but time consuming.. Got the cables from Sunset Porsche in OR for $245. Ask for Luke in parts- great guy!
It shifts now smoother than ever..

There is a fantastic DIY tutorial by Imsomnic on the Rennlist forum:

Best thing I have ever read about console removal and shifter cable changes.

yep, the cables break. mine did, at the transmission end of things. $250 for the part and i DIY'd. i'd say a shop would charge about 3-4hrs labor so if you're handy, consider doing it yourself. easy and lot's of tutorials on here and RL.

Don't forget to pick up the tool to properly set the shifter in the right position when installing the cable.
