Question

Hey guys

When you change the brakes pads (rear) you also have to change the sensors? (My brother has a 997 targa) he went to the dealer today and that's what they told him

yes you have to change the sensor. you would destroy it trying to remove it from the old brake pad and reinstalling.

Two situations that would necessitate new pad sensors:
  1. You've worn down the pads and the sensor is causing a warning to display, which indicates that the sensor is spent.
  2. You break the sensor or a sensor wire during removal or installation.

when I did my brakes myself I was able to pull the sensors out without breaking them. I zip tied them up on the back of the caliper as I check my brakes myself anyway. Seemed silly for me to have to pay $50 a corner to put replacements in when mine are fine and I was not planning on using them anyway. If they are already worn down and cut causing a dashboard light, then yes you have to either replace them or open up the wiring harness on the sensor itself and splice the wires together closing that circuit (if you are not planning on using them anyway).

I also was able to save my sensors. It depends on how worn the brakes are. The dealer is going to quote worst case. Some time they win some time they don't but they never lose money on a job. It's just business. They also don't want any law suits especially when it comes to brakes. Guys who track a lot throw away the sensors. It makes changing to race and street pads about a 10 minute job. They are checking the pads all the time and don't need no stinking sensors.

+1
No need to spend the money if neither one exists.
