Normal Running Temp-With CAI
Normal Running Temp-With CAI
I have had my car for about 9 months and put a K & N CAI in it about 6 months ago. Sounds better than before but not sure I picked up anything on the butt dyno. That being said most of last summer I ran around 200 to maybe 215 on my way home from work with temps close to or at 90 degrees. Now I am running 215-225 on 80 degree days. I am worried that it may get worse as summer progresses.
I know the arguments: It's not really a CAI as it's pulling air from the hot engine bay. The OEM is a true CAI leave it alone etc etc.
I like the sound along with my gundo so if there is no issue running around 215-220 then I can just let it be.
If on the other hand it causes problems then I will switch back to the OEM box.
Anyone with a CAI intake feel free to chime in here with your experience.
Thanks
Caesar

+1 on this. without any type of screening, leaves, bits of branch, even cigarette butts wind up at the bottom of the radiators. last time i cleaned mine, i came out with 2 cigarette butts - nice. a vacuum nozzle fits in there well to suck everything out. could be the culprit or at least adding to the issue. CAI shouldn't have a direct effect on temps. i have the evo and run about 200 most of the time.
I am not familiar with the K&N CAI but you may want to read the thread that Gibbo205 posted about his X-51 intake. It turns out the X-51 air box has a larger intake where the MAF is installed and this impact the A/F because the controls still think the the intake is smaller. He found that the A/F was actually going to about 14.7 rather than the normal of about 13.5.
I have no idea if this is an issue for your CAI, but you may be running lean and this would impact of the engine. You just need to know that the inside diameter of the intake is the same size as the original.
I also have an after market CAI from Fabspeed and I love the sound that it provides. I checked and the intake diameter of this intake is the same as the stock air box so no issues with this but it had me concerned until I verified it.
