Trivial windshield question........

While driving on the infamous 405 yesterday afternoon, I heard a rock hit against the windshield. When I got home, I could see where the damage was. Question is……. How are those DIY resin fillers, or is it better to pay the $500.00 deductible and get a new windshield? Thanks in advance.

Also, I get absolutely terrible AM reception on my radio (and always have). Any thoughts?

I've had mixed results with those resins (although I've always paid someone to do it for me). Some it didn't work at all, some made the crack nearly invisible and prevented it from spreading. It's so cheap you might as well try it.

I had a small in the center and had someone do it for 50 bucks. You have to look hard to even see it. I would try this first. If you are going to have it filled do it right away as it can crack further if you wait.

I have had it done twice to my car. Don't like it though you have to know where it is to really see it. And therein lies the problem. My eyes seem to go to both of the spots. After this summer I think I will have pay the deductible and have the windshield done.
Don't mean to hijack the thread, but has anyone had any problems with a replaceted windshield? Leaks primarily, but anything. My AM reception is horrible also.

Most auto insurance covers glass chip repair for free, did you check. Personally I'd call a pro, the last resort being a windshield replacement because you never know what the results will be. In the Porsche plant a robot installs them.

Unfortunately, in Calif, insurance companies do not provide deductible-free windshield replacement.

i agree that window replacement should be your last resort and be sure to find a reputable installer, if u do go that route.

i have one resin-filled chip/crack that seems to be holding up fine.. so i will wait for couple of more chips before replacing the windshield

I picked up a bad chip a year ago while driving up the west coast. Within a few days the crack had grown long enough to qualify for a replacement. Had it done at a shop used by local Porsche dealer and I have had no problems with the new windshield. When I first got in the car I thought they hadn't installed it yet! Made me realize how badly pitted my old one was.
Personally, I'd leave the chip and see if it grows enough to warrant a windshield replacement, especially if the windshield is old enough to be pitted.

I Think the whole idea of a new windshield is the most appealing. After this one spending 6 years on the road, a new one would probably be amazing. Also, I never thought about the robotic installation factor. So, in theory with manual installation you could end up with wet kneecaps in a rain storm (My Austin Healey) or a possible wind whistle.

Some shops waive your deductible, but insist on OEM if you have to pay anything out of pocket. There are only a few glad mans (PPG and Pilkington among the better ones) which would come even close to OEM specs.

Yes but if you get a verified experienced Porche glass installer it'll be like driving a new car. I replaced the pitted glass on one of our Volvos and can't believe I waited so long. Changes everything.
