Ouch! Simple Green will take off the paint (clear).

I agree with the comments that you shouldn't wipe it down dry. Use a detailing spray if you must, better yet, a real wheel cleaner such as P21S. I also use Griot's wheel cleaner, which seems to be the same stuff.
