And to answer your question: the signal and the move across succeeded each other fairly quickly, but there was no reaction required from the drives in the other lane, as the gap I moved into was at least 4 car lengths and traffic was moving slowly (20 mph).
My move was assertive (as opposed to tentative) but it in no way inconvenienced the drivers in the lane I was moving into.
