997 Regular Oil Service Intervals
I'm told by my Indy that the only real danger to the engine is dirty oil, and he has recommended every 6 months/1 year, whichever comes first. My 2010 997.2 C4S Cab is my new daily driver (just traded in my '04 BMW 645 CI Cab), where I changed my oil every 10k. Any explanation for the difference?
Agree, I have my 06 C2S on the 5K/1yr plan. I do have a question on air filter intervals? How often do you change AIR FILTER v.s what the factory calls for? My dealership offers great discounts on brake and steering fluids when done at the same time as Oil, like almost half price brake fluid and 30% off steering fluids. I took them up on it last service just to start with fresh juice all around. Thoughts?
Correction. Document actually recommends 20,000 miles or every 2 years. Same goes for air filter.
I've replaced my air filter which BMC air filter. BMC air filter is reusable and has a general life-span equal to that of the vehicle. Additionally, it lets more air into the engine while still protecting it better than paper ones.

Brake fluid absorbs the water moisture associated with heating and cooling condensation. Brake fluid gets very hot every time you drive. What could happen under extreme situations is to have the brake fluid boil off the water that was taken into solution, then you lose pneumatic pressure and subsequently you have no brakes. Happened to me on a track a 110 mph during a DE.
I now change my fluid with racing fluid (higher boiling point) every spring. But I've been told every other year is AOK.
Based on my my own driving habits, oil and filter are changed once a year. That is about 4,000 miles per year of normal city and highway driving. The only exception is if I'm participating in a local PCA Driver's Ed track event - then I'll change before the event if its been more than 6 but less than 12 months since the last change. CAVEAT: Don't underestimate the importance of checking the oil level on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, however. It's not unusual for these cars to burn through a quart over 4-5k miles.
I drive a good bit (12k a year), and have been changing it every 10k. Started tracking probably 6 times per year about a year ago. It's been about 5k since my last oil change, and I have a track day at the end of the month. Car is currently at dealership having third radiator installed.... should I have my oil changed now? After track day? Or after 10k miles?
