Comparing my previous 997 cars to the new Boxster S
Truer words have never been spoken. I really had no other choice after driving a few different cars...it had to be a 911 (and I have some history with Porsche in the 80's). I was telling a buddy of mine that now that I finally own a 911 it lifted a very biased weight off my shoulders, as well as put me behind the wheel of a fast car on a regular basis. Now I can go truly TEST drive some cars and maybe even remember what the hell I did!
Previous test drives all I came away with was "WOW!, HOLY $HIT!!"
Previous test drives all I came away with was "WOW!, HOLY $HIT!!"The 991 simply didn't have that same wow appeal . I walked in to order a 991 and never expected to fall in love with the new Boxster S . I had never considered the former generation Boxster .
The 981 really has come that far . The test drive had such a huge "wow" that I drove the car home .
At this stage I feel as though i have 3 different Porsche driving experiences . My modified Turbo is the Hp torque straight line monster . It's power catapults the driver in a sledgehammer face smearing acceleration . MY Cayenne is the rational vehicle . It has space , comfort , and with the V6 is great on gas mileage and ideal for tooling around town . Then there's the Boxster which is this precision mid engine roadster . It's acceleration is nowhere near the power of a turbo but it is seamlessly linear and so well balanced . Of the three cars it's the one i have the most fun driving .
The Boxster originally was introduced as an entry level Porsche . It was 40K in late 90's if i recall and back then a 996 was about 70K . Even though at that time some parts were shared the buyer tended to be different . As the cars both evolved drivers began to comment on the strengths and weaknesses of both .
Fast forward to today .. it's my opinion that the 991 made a huge departure from traditional Porsche 911 cars and the Boxster/Cayman made this huge improvement and is more in line with traditional Porsches .
A lot of emphasis is placed on performance numbers but in real every day driving scenarios I feel that the fun factor doesn't always have to be the fastest car . There are many fast cars .. some of which cost a lot less than Porsches (IE GtR , new Corvette) but I feel its the driving charteristics of Porsche which retains a repeat customer like myself .
consider this. demographics.
what is the average age of a 911 buyer as opposed to a boxster buyer?
for a number of reasons the older in life you get the more money you often seem to have to play with.the boxster buyer has to be younger, how much i dont know.
they might be able to afford the boxster maybe not so much the 911.
they also might prefer the sport factor over luxury, and the drop top.
performance cars have evolved . in the past they were performance/ comfort, now often comfort/performance.
i drive a bmw 535.when i want to drive in sport mode everytime i get in the car,i need to press buttons to adjust the suspension, and drivetrain. that should be the default setting. if i want soft comfort, then i should have to press buttons. and why dont auto makers allow us to choose the default settings we prefer,to avoid pressing buttons everytime we enter?
a couple of questions. ive noticed most times the boxster s is mentioned. with a bump in base price of close to $12,000 over the base boxster aside from the additional 50 hp what else are you getting? and although its minimal, why does the cayman get 10 more hp in their models?

The same "wow" factor happened for me with every single 911 I ever bought (9 in total --4 out of the 997 line up) . In fact I can even recall each of them and list the most memorable ones .

The reasonI picked the Boxster in manual is because I feel that a top down mid engine roadster feels very engaging when rowing gears . After 3500 miles I still feel that way . A few pics of the Boxster below ...
I happen to be one of the rare few who like both manual and PDK equally . I find that the strengths of one reveal the weakness of the other . My Boxster is a manual .I do feel that Porsche made the right choice offering only a PDK in the new turbo . With the 991 I am not sure what I would pick. Originally i felt it ought to be a PDK with PASM and PDCC but now I am not sure .

I have yet to drive a PDK!! I need to do that.
yes... that car is looking real good.
white is the best selling car color...
i usually do the white thing.
i been looking at some pre owned 997s.
black seems to be the most common color.
ive had black cars in the past. dont wanna go back there again.
so that eliminates a good number of cars.
then it seems most i been seeing are s types, and i prefer base.
the numbers get reduced even more when i seek the pdk.
slim pickens. but im looking in a small window. model years 2010-11
i would like to see 911 sales numbers broken down by color .
i did a brief search , but couldnt come up with any.
