What exactly do you lose when you remove PCM?

With Thanksgiving coming up I'm finally going to have some time to spend on my car, so I'm going to do something with the audio setup. Trying to decide between the budget upgrade (speakers), headunit+MOST-HUR+speakers, or whole-hog.

But the other day after DST I went to change the clock and realized this was on the PCM...

I did some searching but did not find any definitive list. It seems I'll lose the lap timer functionality (the stuff on PCM screen), fader functionality, nav directions and song info in the center gauge, and possibly memory seats. Is there more? How would I set the clock without PCM, since it doesn't show up in the stalk-controlled menus on the center gauge?

You will have to set the clock on the little **** between the gauges on the dash. I got rif of my PCM, replace it with an iPad mini and sold the PCM for $800 on ebay...

Go to your owner's manual index and look for clock - here's the page you'll find:

Also, if you have Sport Chrono, without the PCM you lose the ability to use the PCM to set individual items like DRL (on/off), door lock alternatives, etc.

Thanks, that is good to know. So I definitely lose memory seats and fader, right? That would be a huge bummer.

I thought you would keep all the functions if you put in an HUR?

In my opinion, you will lose a boat anchor by ditching the PCM. I recently went with an Alpine INE-W927HD, and love it. I only lost turn directions on the instrument cluster and a couple superfluous functions on the steering wheel that I never used, anyway. I'll be selling the removed PCM here or on Ebay.

Why not consider a custom audio set-up that incorporates the OEM PCM unit??

You could retain the PCM unit and get upgraded mid range drivers, sub woofers & tweeters for the doors, dashboard etc. along with the amps to power them. You would be able to retain all nav & video through the PCM screen. Any competent shop should be able to do this for between $5,000 - $7,500.

Can anyone confirm that it also loses memory seats? That's the only major problem for me. Otherwise I really want to modernize the electronics in this car.

HUR lets you connect your headunit to the bose amp, but the PCM does a ton of "non-audio" stuff for the car which you will lose.

I have an Alpine in mine and memory seats work fine. Setting the clock on the dash is easy, and I guess the sport chrono timer does enough for me considering how rarely I even hit the clock.

I wish the Alpine had a volume **** though. Consider that with whatever head unit you go with.

Awesome, thanks.

Now to decide if I go the most-hur route or if I do amp/components too

+1 except that I don't have chrono, and I don't miss a volume ****, since I have volume control wheel on the steering wheel.

I just got back from a long weekend trip to Palooza in Eureka Springs, and the unit performed flawlessly. Worth every penny to ditch the OEM PCM and retrofit the Alpine.
