Looking for a Porsche! Any Reccomendations?
Hello everyone I am new to this forum. I am currently in the market for a used Porsche. I am looking for a Porsche 911 either 996 between 2000-2004 or 997 years 2005-2010 . I was hoping people with a little more knowledge with the cars could help me out with choosing the right car and packages/features. Are there any known problems with particular years? I do know I would like an NA model. I willing to spend a decent amount on a good car. Anybody have any recommendations on options? Must haves? Should avoid? I would really appreciate anyone's time and opinions for helping in making my selection.
Thanks,
Thomas

GET A PPI BEFORE YOU BUY!!!! And, get it from someone who knows Porsches.
Of the years you stated in your search, I would recommend a 2009 - 2010 Carerra S, or Carerra 4S (Coupe or Cabrio, 6 speed manual or PDK your preference). These models are the 2nd generation 997 and offer a MUCH better PCM (radio/Nav/telephone center) over the 1st generation, a slightly stiffer chassis, have direct injection engines, and have no reported (to my knowledge) IMS bearing failures. If you have the budget, go with an S over a straight Carerra. The S has more umph and a bigger grin factor. A CPO car offers some peace of mind that the car has been inspected, but expect to pay more from a Porsche dealer for any pre-owned car - CPO or not. Lastly, consider a comprehensive aftermarket mechanical insurance plan that covers a Porsche.
You might also consider an '09 - 10 Boxster S or Cayman S. These are ***** to the wall fun cars in their own right and every bit as enjoyable as a 911 to drive and own.
I have an all leather interior, and I almost would prefer a standard interior over the all leather that I have now. The leather is more "delicate" to care for than the standard, and they both look great.
Whatever you decide to buy, join PCA. It's the best $49.00 you can spend on a Porsche.

Especially important considering that the 997.2 do not have an IMS
Get a PPI from the closest Porsche dealership (not from the one you are buying).
Get a DME report to exclude any over-revs in range 4 or higher. Better if there are no recent over-revs.
Ask to see the copy of the bills from any work recently done. Call the mechanic/dealership who has done the work and see if they can pull up some records or remember the condition of the vehicle. This may give you additional info that would not come up in a PPI
If a 997.1, ask that the PPI remove the oil filter and check for metal or other debris.
Check for bad stone chips on the front hood and scratches on the door sills. They are somewhat common, but an excess amount of either one of them, indicates a careless owner.
