Littlemilla3

Littlemilla3 - some questions about your color matching. I'm installing a double DIN head unit upgrade and want to be rid of all standard volcano grey trim.

1. I see white dials on the instrument cluster and some silver trim on your steering wheel. You have a 997.1 C2S or C4S with a sport steering wheel and round airbag, correct?

2. What color interior do you have, grey? Or is it black with just a washed out photo?

3. Your instrument cluster surround looks black instead of the standard volcano grey (around the dials). Did you paint too, just like you did with the Sport/PASM/PSM faceplate?

4. Did you paint your airbag trim too? That would be the final piece of volcano grey. Any pictures of the whole setup?

any thoughts/people that have done this?

Thanks Mike
I've never seen it done, but for just 40 euro it might be worth trying. I would assume it would work but can't know for sure.

1. Yes, this is a 997.1 C2S with sport wheel/round bag.

2. Grey interior

3&4. I haven't done anything with the cluster surround or the wheel trim. The only changes I've made are in the center console stack.

With my grey interior, I think painting the steering wheel trim would look out of place. It would probably look good on a black interior car.

Hi Littlemilla - one final question - what colour did you spray the grey plastic with to match the 997.2 units?

I believe I ended up choosing satin black, but I also wet sanded which removed some of the sheen and any imperfections.

You might be able to get away with flat or matte also, it might depend on which paint line you choose. I would take an interior piece to the hardware store to try find the best match.

Eventually I'll probably just switch to a 997.2 piece since overall it looks better anyway. They are inexpensive even when new (<$100USD), but I just need to figure out the wiring. Maybe when I have some free time...

Let me know if you have any success!

JoelPierla posted earlier in this thread saying he was able attach just the skin and buttons of the 997.2 unit to his 997.1 unit to get around the wiring problem. I'm wondering if this could be a solution for us, maybe he can chime in with more details about what he did.

I had a spare hour to try the "Doner" idea.

I have no idea how to do this - the buttons on the 997.2 unit are not in the same positions so I don't know how to make 1 set work with another circuit board...

Plus the frame for the button holder is different - the one does not fit properly into the other :-(

So either need Expert advice form somebody who has done this or I would need to try the re-wiring.

Or just paint the damned old version :-)

you use the holder and the front fascia of the 997.2 and only use the circuit board of the 997.1. the back connector need to be tweaked/dremeled down a bit to take the 997.1 plug from the car. it took me all 15 minutes

Well - it took me 4 hours...

Joel, i checked your pictures - you have a panel with 2 or 3 buttons right?
if you only have the furthest apart buttons the circuit board works. if you have 4 or more buttons this will not work, the inner buttons are too far out of alignment.

SO, i plugged in the 997.2 board.
the lights, and half the buttons worked, i then spent a couple hours finding the right pins for the other 2 buttons. well happy now though :-)
