Horn stopped working
Horn stopped working
Maybe someone can shed some light as to what is going on, it is a cold winter in Chicago, but my 997 is kept in the garage, I've only used it once, now I took it out because the weather is not as bad and one of my horns has stopped working, it is now a mono tone Sound, I see they're very difficult to get to, has the horn gone bad? Or is there something else I should check? If I need to replace do I really need to take off the whole front bumper? I have a 2008 Porsche 911S Cabrio. Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks.
OK, here is what I found out, the bass horn has stopped working, if you look at the car from the front on the passenger side underneath the bumper there is a little access hole you can barely fit your hand into it, I was able to unscrew the base horn with a half an inch wrench, after taking down the horn I tested it with a cordless drill battery and it didn't work, so I did an autopsy and took it apart, I found some rust inside of it, put some WD-40 and tested it again, now it would work so now I'm sure the horn was at fault, of course I'm not going to put it back in since I'm going to get a new replacement one, I don't want to have to do this again, but at least I can tell you that you can access the bass horn without taking the bumper apart, it does take some contortionism and it helps if you have small hands, which I do not, I'm 6'5 and 195 pounds, anyway if you want to give it a shot let me know how it goes, i'll let you know once I get the replacement horn and it's installed, cheers.

20 dlls, same part number, the plug is a little different so I'll have to splice the cables, but it's the exact same bosh part number low tone horn.
Replaced mine, cost me $60 for a replacement from the dealer. The approach suggested by Martidamm is correct and you could also remove the passenger side fog light to give you a second access point allowing for 2 hands to assist with the replacement process. The access to the horn is very tight and you'll need someone with slim hands and great finger dexterity to complete the process. Worse case scenario...wait until you need to do other stuff that require removing the front bumper and replace the horn then.
PS: The theft alarm horn is close by so don't get confused between the two. After you disconnect the wires, test the horn to ensure you've disconnected the right one.

Great info. I've been thinking about this for about a year now and all the other threads talk about removing the bumper. Does anyone have pics to share to help with the DIY? Also, I read on another thread that pelican sells for $15 compared to the dealer $60. Time to teach my 8 year old twins to put those little hands to work!

Thanks martidamm. Peeked in the access hole yesterday. Wow that is tight. Did you have to jack up the front to get in there? My car is lowered and I can't imagine how I would get in there. I tried to take a pic, I imagine that's the one of the horn openings right in the center of the picture.

One other thing, how do you know which is the high and which is the low. Are they both in there?

Dang this thing is a b&$#%. Spent a 45 min on my back. The nut is on pretty tight and I just couldn't get it loose with the tight space and just one hand. There's a write up on planet 9 that recommends taking the screws off the bottom of the bumper so you can get your left hand under it and your right hand in the access hole. Might try that next.

I was finally able to get this done, using this thread and the trick posted in the link in my post above. Thanks martidamm for the guidance. I posted a DIY here: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforum...l#post11288905.
