cruddy shifter feel with 6mt

I have a GTS cab which I purchased new a couple of years ago. It has a factory sport shifter, and I've never enjoyed the way it feels. Notchy and very difficult to get into second gear, even sometimes when warm. Just doesn't feel good. Also, when I heel toe, frequently there is some kind of subtle clunk from the rear end.
I had a 997.1 before this and I loved the way it shifted, and I'm pretty proficient at heel toe-ing in many other cars, so I don't think it's user error. Today I made the mistake of driving a new Boxster S.....and it felt awesome. Silky shifter, no clunk with heel toe.....it makes me frustrated that I've spent two years not enjoying this car nearly as much as I should have been able to. Any thoughts as to what the problem is or how to correct it, or do I just need to bite the bullet and get a new 981 or 991?

You bought it new, was it always this way? Have you ever had the dealer look at it?

Yes, early on. You know how it is......"oh that's normal for the sport shifter.......it will loosen up with time.......the clunk is due to the traction control......blah blah blah."
