Oil Temp.
Oil Temp.
My 2006 997 has an oil temperature gauge. With ambient temps of 90+ degrees the gauge says my oil temp is about 240 degrees.
That seems high to me. I called a local Porsche store and spoke to a tech. He obviously didn't know the car had that feature(?), but guessed the temp should read about 200 degrees.
Does anyone know what the "average oil temp reading" should be?? Please help! I have 120 miles on the car. A/C was on when I read the gauge, but that really shouldn't matter.

Mine usually reads a bit above 200 degrees when warmed up. After some freeway driving and slowing down to city driving it will read about 1/3 of the way from 200 to 260 (220 or so?)
Unless you are riding around in a lower gear, I would expect it to show not more than 220, but I am no expert.

Don't go by the gauge. Hook up your scanner and look at the oil temp. If you actually are running 240F oil temps, something is wrong and should be corrected immediatly. Hope you're not running 0w40 with those temps?????
99Porsche911,
Im running the factory oil....I guess its 0-40. I had a similar problem with my 1977 2.7 and it turned out to be a defective oil thermostat. I was lying in bed last night and the thought came to me something may be blocking the oil cooler. Only problem is
1) I don't know where the cooler is located,
2) the car is so low I can't get under it.
Of course today is Saturday and the Porsche dealership's service is not open, and Monday is a holiday.
Other than that I will have a great weekend!

Don't worry about it
Mine runs anywhere between 200-230 or so depending on if I have the air on and the ambient temp is about 95-100 in Texas right now. Having just moved to Texas from SoCal I'm actually looking forward to winter for the first time in my life. I'm wondering what kind of temps the car will run at in the 40 degree daily winter temps. My experience says that ambient temps won't make that much difference, the car is engineered to run at certain optimal temp ranges probably somewhere around 200 degrees. My older (air-cooled) car is much more sensitive to ambient temps, it will run at about 150 degrees on cold/cool days.

Thanks guys. I was really looking forward to driving the car this Sunday morning. I spent yesterday afternoon claying most of the car. This is the first new 911 I have ever had and I want to keep it perfect.

If you guys are running with oil temps that high, you will soon begin bruning oil if you stay with the 0w40. The 40 weight protection is reduced to less than 30 weight quite quickly above 240F which will result in premature bearing and valve guide wear. I suggest you put in a 15w50.
Running cooler.
Everyday I go to the same restaurant because of the outside patio. Coming home this morning the outside temp was about 5 degrees hotter than yesterday, but my 997 ran about 4 degrees cooler..around 218. I've got about 200 miles on the car. Hopefully this is a good sign.
