California Festival of Speed
California Festival of Speed
I went out to Fontana yesterday to the Festival of Speed. There wasn't much happening there. Some really cool sounding Porsches on the track and a few nice cars to look at.
It was really low key, with not many vendors. However things got to be really fun and exciting when they let us bring our cars out on to the track. This was the first time I've ever done this and I had a blast! I can see why guys spend so much time and money on track days. My car handled wonderfully. I had a passenger that I met at the show who also had a total blast.
I'm trying to put together some video that we shot. But in the meantime, here are a couple of pics of my car in the grid before we went out. I gotta say, I think my car is pretty nice looking there.

I was unable to make it down this weekend, but I ain't buyin the "there wasn't much happening there" bit. hahaha. come on!
Were you on a parade lap or were you gunning for fast lap times?
I've been watching the FB page, the instagram #'s and it looks like it was a fantastic weekend. So bummed I couldn't get down there.
Your wheels look great!

Seriously, it was kinda dead when I was there yesterday. I didn't get to see the 918 Spyder (that would have been pretty cool). Maybe I was just there at the wrong time.
The most interesting cars were run of the mill ferraris
and a lambo or two. But seriously the coolest cars that I saw were an immaculate blue 914, a vintage long hood 911 done up like a rally car with the lights and the monte carlo rally logos, and a super cool glacier blue '84 Carrerra 3.2 that was bone stock and absolutely gorgeous.
I missed all the cool kids with the 918 or an Enzo.

haha. That sucks! I figured it was going to be EPIC until after sundown. Glad I didn't blast down there from the bay area early-early Sunday morning. It was on my mind all day, and I kept kicking myself for not getting my tail down there sooner. On the bright side, it was awesome up here along the coast, so I did a few late afternoon victory laps along the 1 and I didn't have to do the 5 round-trip on a Sunday.
Parade lap was fun, auto cross was fun, the person in the car with me said I was a great driver, food was good, parking lot was a car show, and weather was perfect Saturday! Great Porsche day!

Would you care to critique this glacier blue cab?
I think timing was everything. I arrived mid afternoon on Saturday and things were winding down for the day. There was the GT3 Cup race, some autocross and lots of nice cars in the parking lot. The concours was over and mostly cleared out. I wasn't sure what to expect, I don't think the swap meet amounted to much and I was surprised that HRE had so few wheels on display. I didn't have far to drive, so I would do it again. I would just plan get there earlier.

I think early Saturday was the sweet spot. They had the timeline, concour, vendors and racing all at the same time. And the Porsche corral was packed.
My son and I had a good time. I'll have to try the parade laps next year.

Gorgeous color! My wife almost bought a Boxster in that color some years ago. She went with an Audi S4 cab instead, and now is in a 2011 997.2S cab.
Got up to 100 MPH
It was difficult, but by allowing some space between myself and the lead car I was able to get up to 100 once. I doubt the lead car ever got beyond 90 MPH. Being up on the banking was interesting, but things were much more fun once we dived down into the infield with all the curves and rumble strips.

I was there Sat and we had a blast. Parade lap was awesome, 991 test drive on the autocross track was a thrill and half (worth the 2.5hr wait in line), the roar of the GT3 cup cars was music to the ears, good camaraderie, huge turnout on a perfect SoCal weather!!!
I was there Saturday morning as well. Had a good time. I was able to reach 110 on the straight and took the bank at 95 before I had to slow for traffic. The food was good or at least the catering truck we chose was. Spicy chicken wings from an asian guy...very yummy. Not much for vendors as I was hoping more parts distributors like Pelican or someone would be there because I was looking to order or score some parts. Disappointed the 918 wasn't there too but overall we enjoyed it.
