Yes, I've been using that dedicated porsche cable.

Got that right! Well, figured it out and it might help others. When you go to the DISC menu on the PCM 3, there is an OPTIONS tab. When you select the tab, there is a box to enable the AUX input. If you don't enable it, it doesn't work!

I enabled it and it sounds HORRIBLE. Unbelievable. Also, there is no interface whatsoever. You need to control everything from the unit itself. So, my hi rez player is a total waste for the car. The iPod line in is a MUCH better interface. Not only is the line in sound input much better, you get a full readout on the screen, with artist, album and song. Looks like I'm getting a new iPod classic and getting rid of the hi rez player, it's not worth it.

It absolutely won't read lossless or high-rez files. Just won't. I did a ton of research and listening tests and I found 360 fixed bit rate MP3s ripped with a LAME encoder sounds best. I was shocked that it really is acceptable.

I highly recommend ripping a good CD using ALAC or AIFF to your iPod and use a cable into the car. I think you'll really like the results. You have PCM 3 right? I don't recall. You'll also get the huge benefit of a usable interface on the PCM screen.

One thing to not forget: ever since the Apple products came out, a lot (if not the majority) of car audio manufacturers started to "engineer" their units to be fully compatible ("maximized) with the Apple products (ipod, iphone, etc.). I once bought a Clarion unit and it played Iphone music wonderfully.

I was following your hi-rez adventure since I am always open-minded. Sorry about the results.

The iPhone doesn't fit very well in the arm rest portion. I want to keep it in the hole in front of the shifter.

Go to Parts Express and look for a 32 pin to 32 pin extension. I'm sure they have one. You'll never find the odd pin Porsche connector in a longer length.

Thanks, didn't think about an extension...sometimes wonder where my mind is.

Will I suffer a quality loss?

All depends if it is a digital stream or not. If analog, those cables introduce noise and all kinds of nasty degradation. If it is digital.... it either works or not - usually.

Good point. For this it is an analog out since we don't have any DAC processing in the car. For this application, the degradation should be minimal. The convenience should overcome the loss. If it were a Bentley, you might notice the difference!

Has anyone played/experimented with this DAC for their cars? I have the home model one for the home audio, and I like it. I was going to try it for the 997 but I just had not had the time.

Hmm. Tricky with these devices. Tough question if this is really a dac or not. I'm not even sure if there are digital outputs on an ipod. I used a Wadia ipod dock for a while and found it was really pretty mediocre.

larrytrk is infamous around these parts
Old original Porsche iPod cord, no usb included + iPhone 5S + 30 to 10 pin converter
Equals a PCM3 with a buzz, then, no sound at all, stuck in AUX.
Did not reset until plugged into dealer laptop PIWIS.

FYI, before this unit my IPod music sucked pretty bad coming from the Martin Logan's. One of my better investments.

Thus, I was going to try the car unit.

Similar to you, I don't know if the iPhone has digital out.
