How does my oil level look?
Seems like every few months someone asks that exact question...

Thanks, I guess I could have searched but hey if everyone did no one would make any posts!
In one of those threads someone said to check the level when it's cold, that has to be wrong I was told to only take the reading when the engine is hot.
I feel then 2/3 full between the min and max bars is about spot on. Cheers guys.

997.1. - ck with engine not running.
997.2 - ck with engine running.
At the minimum, keep it at the 2/3 mark. At 1/3, the oil indicator may go off depending on your driving style.

Conditions for measuring the oil level
1. It is important to ensure that the vehicle is horizontal for correct oil level measurement to occur.
2. Engine is off.
3. Ignition on.
It continues to say:
It is best to measure the engine oil level before embarking on a journey (if the vehicle has not been driven for an extended period) or with the engine at operating temperature. Shorter waiting times are achieved in this way.
I interpret the "It is best" portion to refer to both "measuring the engine oil level before embarking on a journey" as well as "with the engine at operating temperature" equally. The caveat being that shorter wait times are achieved when the engine is cold.
So do it either way, but you wait longer when the engine is at operating temperature...
Which leads me to pg 120 where it talks about the parameters for automatic oil level reading when refueling. Absolutely fascinating stuff, but perhaps this should be the subject of yet another post
