Help with tires cupping/cutting - 997S with Turbo 997.1 wheels and 305s.

Hey everyone,

First of all, long time, no talk. I'm back in a 997S now. It came with real turbo wheels on it (2S car). They are the real forged 19X11 (my only issue is rear, so I'm only talking rear here). I put set of Bridgestone RE-11s on (305/30-19) in October. I've been smelling burning rubber for a while and had no idea why. Well, I think I found it. I took the wheels off today to swap out the spark plugs and for my FD muffler install, and the inside 3/4 inch of both were CORDED. Way too early. I can't see what they would be hitting though. Any help? I just ordered another set of 305s today from TireRack, but would it be fixed it I went with 295s? Is it an offset issue where I just need to get new wheels?

Any help is very appreciated. Thanks much, and I'm glad to be back!

You should go to a tire shop and have them evaluate your off set and wheel/tire width. You obviously have a problem that needs to be looked at in person. Not enough information contained in your post to even get close.

Do you feel/hear any running at low speeds? Lot of people here have 305s on 11"rims, not sure about turbo wheels offsets..

Isn't the problem that the rear turbo wheels are meant for widebody porsches and you have them on a narrow body Porsche?

I have wide body wheels on my narrow body c2s and 305 tires - no problem with rubbing. I think you have an issue with your alignment

As recommended above, get yourself an alignment/suspension check.

Note that 'some' tires are prone to cupping.

OOC, what brand of tires do you have in the front?

Narrow body has 11x19 with ET 67 on rear.

Turbo runs 11x19 with ET 51 on rear.

Difference of 16 millimeters is more than half an inch. Together with the 305 may well cause rubbing.

Regards,

CF

Right, cool flash. That's what's concerning. Plus, the smell of burning rubber from both wells. I'll post a pic of them up asap. It's less like cupping and more like being cut and formed gradually to go around something that is hard and immovable. Thanks for all the help, fellas.

If it was rubbing a lot then you would feel it, and if it is rubbing just a little then alignment may fix it.

My C2S is running the 19"x11J Turbo Style for the rear. The offset is ET67 for the rear and running 305 without any issue. I took the wheel out last week to double check the offset, and the tire wearing looked fine.

May be first is to confirm the exact offset of your wheels, if it is indeed ET51, it should extend outward by 16MM... giving MORE clearance on the inside.

I'm tried fitting another set of wheels with ET48 for both front and rear last week and they were fine too.

Mine are definitely ET51. I get what you're saying, and will take it to a shop (if one is open) tomorrow. Otherwise, I'm buying some wheels and tires immediately.

Can you post a photo showing the "CORDED" location?

I run wide body 19x11 ET 51's on a narrow body C2S with 305 tires. No rubbing. Others run narrow body 19x11 ET 67'x with 15mm spacers on a narrow body C2S with 305 tires. No rubbing.

Inside edge wear on both sides means alignment or suspension problem. Are you lowered on aftermarket springs or coilovers? Was an alignment done afterwards to correct the excessive camber from dropping the car? Excessive Inside wear on both tires happens when dropping without correcting the camber change.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate the help. The car is on factory PASM. No lowering. That's the shocker. Both sides are being cut equally, but I couldn't get a good pic of the driver side. Just assume it sucks as much. You can tell a bit in the bottom pic, but it literally has a right angle cut out of it.

That's not camber wear, that's rubbing. Something is really off with those wheels. Do you have ramps you could put the car on? You want to be able to get under the car with weight on the wheels to see what is touching. And don't despair yet, this could be fixed with spacers.

How flush is the outer edge to the car, width wise? My 19x11 ET 51's are flush to the rear fender.
