adding the sport chrono package

Hello, I have a few questions about adding the sport chrono package to my 911 4Scab(997) 2012.I have recently asked the dealership to give me a estimate. That was a little over a week ago. I have not heard from them. Is that normal to take so long for an estimate? Should I try someone else to complete this service(that is ,a non Porsche dealership?)

What approach should I take to get this done? I have never done additional service to a car so new(3500 miles on it), I'm not sure who to trust, beside the Porsche dealerships.

Thanks for your input.

go to another dealer or a Porsche specialist. i imagine , once you see the estimate, you will not want it. my local dealer kept my car over a week to diagnose a problem. finally picked up my car because they were too busy , and had a Porsche specialist diagnose and fix in 2 days. they will always have my business over the dealer. i even work at a dealership ( not Porsche) . i think every dealership stands on its own, and there is no "typical" time frame for an estimate. you are the customer and your expectations have to be met . only by going to competitors, will you know if you are being unreasonable , or if the first place just dropped the ball.

The car is actually at my home, they asked for the vin #, and I haven't heard from them . I,m not going to go to that dealership, I was told it should not cost more than 2grand for the service. Anyways. I'm going to see some of my PCA buddies this weekend, let's see what they have to say. Can't trust anyone anymore.

You can find the cost of the parts on the Porsche tEquipment web site. The cost is $902 for a manual tranny and $1266 for an automatic. (see http://content2.us.porsche.com/prod/...rm&country=usa).

Any remaining cost is labor, pretty much for replacing the switch set and reprogramming the car to accept it. 2K sounds quite high, even at Porsche labor rates... but maybe I'm wrong.

Thanks StormRune, that was helpful, I just may order it first then find an installer.

Thanks again

Glad to help. Don't forget that it is likely that the Porsche service dept will probably have to do the reprogramming step for the car to accept the new switch and capability... unless you can find an installer who has the PIWIs device.

I upgraded my 2011 cab when I owned it. To get the software, you will have provide your VIN# to Porsche through a dealer, if you are a PCA member you should get 10-15% discount on the kit. My upgrade cost me $1100 installed at one of the local ATL Porsche dealers. The software (sport/sport plus) make big difference in the driving fun of the PCAR

What does the Sports Chrono package do for a manual transmission car? My 997S has the PASM button, but no sport button. I understand that on PDKs the sports chrono changes the shift points, but what does it do for you when you have a stick shift?

That's a good question Dave, I don't know the answer to that. Lol

Wow, I would love to get that done for 1,100 bucks. That would be awesome, but I have a feeling here in Chicago , their going to charge me a bit more. We'll see .

It changes the throttle mapping. In sport and especially sport plus, the motor reacts much stronger to throttle input, although it does not add to the total power. For PDK, sport chrono adds launch control and in sport plus, it won't let you shift into 7th and quickens shifts (sport and more so in sport plus). You'll find yourself in sport most of the time unless you want maximum acceleration and the quickest shifts a 997 is capable of, which isn't 981/991 quick even in sport mode.

I'm assuming with sport chrono retrofit, you don't get the stop watch??

That is true, if you retrofit, which is what I intend to do, you do not get the chronograph on dash.

You have a manual gearbox? For the money, I'd buy a IPD plenum. Since all you'll get with sport chrono is a sharper throttle with no additional power. With the plenum, you get both and you can take it off and sell it some day. Retrofit sport chrono will add zero to the future value of your car.

No , I have a PDK. Dave was inquiring about the benefit of the sport chrono package on a manual trans.
