997 Gen 2 Carrera S: Ripoff? Keep searching?
Not sure what OP is actually hoping to get from us based on his initial questions but to answer them specifically
is it a ripoff - no
should you keep searching - sounds like you should if you think the C2s prices are inflated
should you look at '09 and '10 for sub 65K car - that's your best bet if you want a low mileage/unmolested car

not unheard of to get 10K off dealership asking price. Got mine 7K lower. You can find a 2011 below $70K but you'll have to wait, it'll be private seller, probably won't have warranty, and probably higher miles.
For perspective, my traded in '09 997S launch car is still sitting on the lot right now for $59.9K. Nearly 40K miles. PDK, heated power sport seats (for sure the best seat), sport chrono, PASM, Bose, PCM/Navi. I think they have it priced too high, but that's their business. It's clean though. Personally I got tired of owning the not so great handling Porsche. The extra power is awesome, but at the expense of corner entry and mid corner speeds, and mpg of course.
BTW, I wouldn't necessarily buy a base 997 or 987 either as there's more missing than just power such as smaller less powerful brakes. But at least with the 997 base, you get decent power as the motor is still 3.6l with around 325 hp. The base 987 is only 2.9l and around 250 hp. The 991 base is the first 911 in over a decade I'd consider as it has the 997S brakes and 350 hp 3.4l motor, which is on par with a 997.1 S.

So be it the '11 has a fair asking price, and then I'll just look for an 09 and 10 with reasonable lower miles if I want to hit the 65K price point. Maybe others are willing to pay more their used vehicles. Or if the car hangs around long enough on their lot, then they may offer something in between that might work out well for me a couple months down the road.

While these cars may be mass produced, each one is very different.
While two may look alike, the extras set each one apart. Those extras can add up to alot of $$$. I found a low mileage cpo car with most of the options that I would have purchased if I was buying new. Did I pay a little more for this car, maybe, but I got the car I wanted and I am very pleased with my purchase. Buy a car that you will enjoy owning andd don't look back.

I love the Cayman and Boxster car but the reason I have a 911 is because I need the rear seats. I know they are small seats and if you have a family you will always have another car however the advantage of having a second car that can transport 4 people if needed though means the 911 makes more sense for me at the moment.
As to price observations I would say an 11 is mid 60s to low 70s. GTS seem be more around the mid 70s to low 80s. The 997 2011 to 2012 models must be feeling a lot of pressure downwards now as I am starting to see 991 base in the high 70s and the c2s 991 in the lower 80s.

I had a base 911, and I was OK with that. Now I have an "S" and I'm OK with that too. I don't think any less of someone who chose (for whatever reason) not to get an S. Nor do I suspect the OP gives a rat's butt what you drive. He's just asking for help. If you can't make a positive contribution to the thread, just move along to the next one.

May I respectfully suggest that maybe you should be a bit less sensitive? I don't think he was slamming anyone, he just said that a base 911 would not be for him. That's his opinion and perceived need, so that's fine. I had a base 911, and I was OK with that. Now I have an "S" and I'm OK with that too. Hey OP I was actually in this position about a week ago. I can't speak for other areas of the country but for the Northern California San Francisco Bay Area, I looked everywhere. I called all the Porsche dealerships and looked at all the usual private party sale websites. I did see a wide range for Carreras. I also saw a lot of private party sellers asking dealership prices. I could have easily found a car at a reasonable price if I compromised on my specs and went for a color like silver instead of what I wanted (black) In the end, I found a 2011 Carrera S with 20k miles. Black on black with manual transmission. The exact specs I was looking for. And the price was 68k at a non Porsche dealer. It was a 1 owner California only car. And they wouldn't budge on the price. Not a killer deal for me but it was definitely a fair price and I was able to get all the specs I wanted. Out the door after taxes and fees, I paid 77k for it. And it has 1 year left on the manufacturer warranty. Before looking at the one that I bought, I also looked at a 2009 Carrera S at a Porsche dealership with 30k miles and no warranty and they were asking the same price (68k) when I looked at it, the car was in absolute hideous cosmetic condition and I wouldn't have even paid 50k for it. That bad.

Sucks I know. Welcome to California haha. I don't know the exact fees and numbers off the top of my head but it's basically 9% for CA state sales tax, plus a San Francisco city tax because the dealership was in San Francisco, then the dmv registration fee, then a dmv title transfer fee, a CA clean air fee, a CA highway patrol fee, and other random junk fees that makes one reconsider living in CA. Haha
when we bought the wife's '08 c4, similar s models were all about $5k more with much higher mileage and fewer options. Naturally we all want more power but since it is her daily driver, and we won't track it, what was the point. And, if I was wanting to do street racing, I would have bought a mustang. I live in a larger military town and there are dozens of Mustangs and Challengers that will outrun all but the very fastest Porsches from red light to red light.
