i had it filled to all bars and soon afterward started to see what i can only describe as blow by from, i guess, the AOS and intake manifold started to get dirty, went through the panic of having to change the AOS to the tune of...what, i don't know, lots, when i figured it out...drained the oil in the filter canister, cleaned intake and no more cry...lesson learned, do you have the blow by thing? easy fix...thank gawd...

As others have said, drain some oil. It maybe just a couple 100 ml over full, but it maybe a lot more. 7.5 qts doesn't sound enough to fill it, let alone over fill it. I put in just under 8.5 qts with mine.

I have overfilled it before too but I never got the error light. If it were me, I would drain and not take chances. Heck, a veteran mechanic friend of mind once forgot to put the drain plug and he just found out when he was standing in a pool of new oil. 
Bottom line is that we all tend to get confused. Worst case, OP might also have a bad pressure system or something else if after draining the error light continues to be on.
Drain it: 5-10 min of drain ain't worth the possibility of damaging a $20,000.00 engine.

I do think you can get brief flash of oil light if you do not prefill filter before putting canister on. Seems I've see that before. Can't really argue with prudence of course. Be interested to see what OP finds.

In 3 decades, I have 2 mistakes:
1. Not checking that the oil filter rubber gasket did not stay on the engine mounting surface. Obviously, it leaked.
2. I forgot to screw the cap back onto the engine oil fill hole. Boy, what a mess!

I think yours counts bcoz it was a Subaru. Mine were on a Chrysler Horizon and Chevy chevette so mine don't count. Are you old enough to know Horizon and Chevy chevette? Lol!

Don't want to hijack this thread too much longer but my first car was a 1948 Studebaker. It was 7 yo, I was 17. Do the maths
Totaled it the second day. Had better luck since then. Take care. NB: Managed to add 5 years to my age. Old but not there yet.
