New Guy looking into Porsche
Two years is a long time to wait. Plus at any given point (year from now, two from now, etc.) in time waiting two years and saving more money is going to get you something better. Two years from now the suggestion will be to wait two years and get a GTS.
You can get a good 05 Carrera S for your 40k budget.

...Much like me waiting for the next 60" flat screen TV or the next Iphone, year after year after year after year...... I guess, in summary, our respective budget will never keep up with technology.
Research what you think you want. In about 2 weeks, I went from looking for an 06 boxster s and wanting to spend 30k to buying a 2011 Carerra S for 80k out the door - all based on the research I did within those 2 weeks.
Yeah...I've considered waiting too. 12 months would allow me to get into the high 60's or low 70's cash.
I've got a project car I can do in the meantime that'll bring good money. I was just hoping to avoid doing another project and get a car I can just drive. But it might be worth the wait. That 2011 we drove Saturday was REALLY sweet...plus I'm sure I could find a certified car. Maybe get a Carrera S too.

Which 2011 did you drive on Saturday? (Edit* I just went back and re read your post*)
If you can pull off a 2011 Carerra S I would say do it for sure. I bought my 2011 S about 2 and a half months ago and love it.
From re-reading your post, you sound a lot like I was a few months ago. I knew I wanted a porsche but I was literally all over the map. I was looking at boxsters, caymans, 997.1's, and an early 997.2 But like I said after doing a bunch of research on the stuff I wanted, reviews, build quality, ownership history, etc. (and considering this is going to be my daily drive) I went with the 2011 carerra S. Very happy with it. Keep test driving as many as you can and you will know when it's the right one. :-)

Not sure about the auto tranny...don't get me wrong, it was a great transmission. But like anything else mechanical it will fail. That's one crazy expensive tranny to replace!!!
