Paint Touch Up
Paint Touch Up
What's the best way to touch up a rock chip? I have a good size scratch down to the metal from a rock at the top of my rear right quarter panel. I bought the touch up paint from my dealer but don't want to make it look worse than it is. Any recommendations on how to best apply it? It also came with a clear coat.
Thanks!

Use a toothpick as an applicator to slowly fill in the chip. Less is more in these cases and you can slowly keep adding more paint until the chip is filled. That's how I do it. Also you can try dr. Colorchip. If you screw up you can use the solvent to remove the paint fairly easy and it doesn't ruin your existing paint. I'm sure others will chime in with more suggestions.

My paint is seal gray and I had a small chip i thought was a no brainer. Since I am OCD on this car I expected to get a near perfect repair. I tried Dr. Colorchip and the factory touch up paint but nothing would allow the repair to 'blend in'. One of the reasons is the metallic in the paint. If you get it right no one will notice the repair but you. Your car is black, I don't know if that is better or worse for a repair. If the chip is in a high profile area i would contact a professional detailer, money well spent.
There are some Youtube diy's on fixing chips, I wasted a lot of time trying those techniques.
I spent many hours trying different ways to get the repair perfect but it's a sure route to madness, you have to settle for 'acceptable'.

I have used Dr Colorship as well with very good results. However, my Red 911 only had couple of very minor rock scratches.
The good thing about Dr Colorship is that it is "watery" so I find it easier to apply than dealership paint repair kit. Also, as mentioned above, it is very easy to remove if you are not satisfied. It takes several iterations to fill in the gap and it will be a lot easier to avoid having a blob of paint.
Good luck.

I just ordered the Dr. Colorchip. I have a Basalt Black car but couldn't verify the color code from my car. Where is the code? I checked the inside of both doors but don't see the color code? Can someone let me know what the code is off the car?
Thanks,
Jon

They let you look it up on their website too.
The site says you have to confirm on your car the code but my door stickers don't have a code listed.
