Weird ignition/key issue
Weird ignition/key issue
Last night after I parked my car, it turned the car off and went into the house. Absentmindedly leaving the key in the ignition. This morning I went outside and realized the rear spoiler was up. I then sat behind the driver’s seat, saw the keys, tried to remove them, and they will not come out of the lock. The car won’t turn on, and the only instrument light on is the red airbag light.
Any suggestions for this weird one would be greatly appreciated!

Nope, not yet. I thought I would call the Auto Club in the morning and have them open the hood with the instructions in the manual. Then I thought I could get a jump start from them and leave the car running for 30 minutes or so with the hope that the battery will be charged.. Or do you think at this stage it's better just to put in a new battery once they arrive? This one has been fine, but it is over 3 years old. Also, will the air bag light automatically go off once its charged, or is that a dealer reset?

Sure...but the likelihood of reviving a dead battery this way is pretty slim.

If I were far away from home and couldn't wait for a truck, I would. But since the car is in the garage, why take chances killing the alternator.

I wouldn't recommend charging the battery by running the car. The alternator was never meant for this hard task. Charging a dead battery this way often results to a shirt-lived alternator--but that's me.

regardless of what batteries say....72,84 month warranty, etc... im with the majority here by thinking a new battery should be installed in quick order.
I don't want to rely on a battery I know has been drained and dead at some point.
And yes, the walmart batteries are very good quality.

i took your advice. The AAA kid came over jump started the car, and I then took it out for a spirited drive. By the time I was at the end of the driveway all warning lights were off, and the battery seems fine by the time I returned home 30 minutes later. What was weird was the spoiler going up when the battery initially died, almost like a warning flag that something was wrong.
