Whites not my favorite but the 4S is my favorite 911 in the 996 and 997 series.

No, the stopwatch only runs when you are recording lap times in sport chrono mode. It is enabled using the lower left stalk on the wheel to select Chrono in the center display and selecting start. The light also stays off when not in use.

Note that you don't actually have to be doing laps, but that is its intent. You could just use it whenever you are out and about. I'm not sure if the 997.1 models do this, but in my 997.2 I use the sport chrono when autocrossing and it captures all of my speed, gear, rev, temp, lateral Gs, etc. data so I can download it later and see what my performance looked like. The download can be sucked into Excel and broken into columns using its delimited text-to-data function.

I'm still in middle of that,ended up switching to a diff car. Will post when it's for sure done deal. I've been itching to buy some wheels for it but I'm waiting for the final word!

Man their has been some super nice cars traded hands in Houston last week! A beautiful Mexico blue 997.1S and a perfect Guards red 997.1S
