DFI Engine: Will an Aftermarket Tune clean up The Sooty Exhaust?
DFI Engine: Will an Aftermarket Tune clean up The Sooty Exhaust?
2009 Carrera S. Runs great but I am amazed how dirty the exhaust tips get after a day's driving. Do the DFI engines run rich? Can this be "cleaned up" with an aftermarket tune on an otherwise stock engine?
Some of the early facelift builds had higher oil consumption and sooty rears. Porsche subsequently revised the piston rings to a smaller tolerance level and the issue was resolved.
Check with your dealer whether your car is one of the early ones.

I never heard about the rings mentioned above. I have an 09 and the exhaust tips get a little black. However I use no oil at all so it makes me wonder. I did read that DFI engines all produce a little of this black stuff. I wouldn t worry about it unless you are using oil.
FWIW, I have the same issue on my 2008 997.1S. I haven't noticed it as much since switching to black chrome tips, although I'm sure that didn't affect soot production. I actually has some soot on my bumper, though only on one side. I don't have excessive oil consumption, as my engine was rebuilt about 10,000 miles ago.
