Best way of learning the basic mechanics of a 911
Hello,
I have to admit when it comes to the mechanics of a car, I can't really do much in terms of DIY.
I don't own a 911, and other than reading through older threads are there any good videos on youtube that go over the basics of the car? I want to get to know the car so when I go to the mechanics I have a better understanding of whats' going on etc. (and maybe one day do some DIY myself).

If you're wanting to get into DIY eventually, you can still read up on basic maintenance as well as get a good idea about the car by reading through our DIY Tech Articles here.

I have a really nice manual for the 997.2 models called the 2009 Technic Introduction. It has over 170 pages of in-depth info about most of the tech in the car.
From a web search it appears that both RennTech.org and Planet-9.com has downloads of it available for members, or it looks like someone on the Pelican forums may have some for sale here (no affiliation but the price looks fair): http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...on-manual.html. The seller has photos of some of the sample pages.
I highly recommend it you are interested in 997 models from 2009 on.

I'm new to Porsche and having been much of a DIY'er until recently. The info from Pelican has been extremely helpful!!! Thanks, Pelican!

reading is great and hands on working with a friend that is knowledgeable and skillful is best (and fun too).
I ve been on both sides of this coin. I ve been with people that are years ahead of me and I ve helped others who have far less experience than I. Either way it s a great experience and fellowship with other auto DIYers.

I started with this book (previous Ed.) 20 years when I wanted to learn more about cars. When I had some of the basics down, then I started researching specific designs of the cars I was interested in. Its a lot of information but I enjoyed reading it.

u don't have a 911... but u wanna learn the basic diy of 911... for when u take it to a mechanic ?
confused.
Actually, I think it is pretty wise to become familiar with 911s before buying one. I know on my first one I didn't know enough about what I was looking at to make a fully informed decision and ultimately ended up buying another once I understood the cars better. I thought my general sports car literacy was enough but with these cars there is enough special tech that I ended up being discovering I was fairly naive about 997s. I think OP is completely on the right track for making an intelligent purchase. Good luck dualexhaust!
I still stand by my suggestion in my original post on this thread. Spending $30 bucks or so on that book is well worth what it will tell you about the 997.2 (if that is the model you are interested in).
