Out with my 997.2 and in with a 2000 BMW M coupe
Come on guys, he already said it was a downgrade due to family reason. You don't need to put anymore salt on the open wound.
OP - you're a wise man "a happy wife make a happy home", cars come and go but wife is here to stay for better or worse. I am glad you found happiness in the M Coupe, they are rare. If you can convince the wife to get into 997TT or even 996TT, you prolly won't lose a lot of money for resale. These are are at their lowest price point now. Good luck

You will be the first to know sir.
My god this clown shoe is good. Second best car I have ever had. First is the 997.2 but I enjoy it better than my old 997.1. Once I upgrade the tired suspension to KW, I will track it and see it's true limits. The steering is more precise, the chassis is more capable, the *** is easy to swing out... Yes less power but it has great torque. and the sound...
Hate all ya want dalancroft but a man buys his own ****.

Not to worry, my friend, I buy plenty of my own toys. Mostly A/V equipment and high-end vacations. Had a chance (via my wife's company, go ahead and rag on me some more) to visit Toronto in 2011. Great town, excellent food, awesome walking. Enjoy your new "shoe"! (Sending you good karma.)

I had a 97 M3, that was a fun car. Sometimes I think about that dramatic downgrade. Sorry OP, those M coupes are just ugly. They are a very nice track car, but were not at all popular. I would be stunned that they actually appreciate in value. Buyers for those cars are few and far between - in some ways like the buyers for Z8's. Another rare car that really doesn't do anything incredibly well, but is still rare. I would think of an E30 M3 as more fun as well. Anyway, hope you enjoy it and drive her hard.
Last time I got out of my 997S to please the wife by getting out of a Porsche. Got an E92 M3. Really didn't like it. Got an '08 997 turbo to please me. Switched to an '11. Never been happier back in a Porsche. Wife got over it. Figure I'll go back to a new M4 eventually, but they are way too expensive used right now.

So the downgrade that I swallowed was to a BMW. A so called ugly one at that. I paid $33k CAD. That is worth in US currency $534.00. Sorry, something a lot less than $33k CAD. Go to autotrader.com (US site) now and see the prices for a 2000 M Coupe. Hmmmm... Around $33k USD...
We are gear freaks guys? We like to drive at the max guys? We love cool cars guys?
The first gen M Coupe is a lunatic of a driver's car. Have an open mind 997 dudes. Can we not entertain the thought of an ugly BMW could come close to the joys of driving a 997?
You guys are auto bullies. When I get back into a 997, has to be a turbo next time, I will still have my shoe. One in four in all the world. I will still play in my shoe. I will always be happy in my shoe. And you would all have missed out on one of the most fulfilling driving experiences.
Defending my shoe is starting to become laborious...

I have owned probably more cars than 20 people do in a lifetime. Everything from a CJ5 Renegade to a 300k Italian exotic. Whether it was a Porsche, Ferrari, BMW, Maserati, Lamborghini, or Triumph, I was always able to find good things and bad about the car. Some of the bad things I had to change, some I learned live with and some made me ultimately get rid of the car, and in very rare case (like my little Abarth) those things made the car even more enjoyable. OP it is your car, your marriage, and for you to determine what driving enjoyment means to you. You see people do not drive cars in the same way feel the same enjoyment from them or are many cases not able to see their faults. If someone gave me a turbo first thing I'd do is turn into RWD (like I always do) I think AWD sports cars should be melted down had turned into housing for the poor. Am I right about that, nope but I cannot stand the feel, so guess what every persons AWD car would not feel right to me. But that is merely my opinion which I would not expect anyone to care about, or suddenly turn the car into RWD because of. So like I said it is up to each one of us to decide what we enjoy in a car. You enjoy that M (I have two BMW's as well as 2 Porsche's as part of the group right now) and when you do get that turbo turn it into RWD LOL!
