My brakes are squealing and I just want to know if it's normal or not..

The pads and discs were replaced 5000 miles ago, the calipers were just rebuilt, the shims are brand new and I put high quality ceramic brake grease around the metal bits on the shim pads that sit into the caliper piston.

I also put the grease on the top edge of the brake pad where the bracket pushes down on, I also put some grease on that bracket and also on the bolt that goes across the bracket.

Brakes still squeal. If I hose the discs out that stops them from squealing but only for a few days then it comes back. Tried braking hard a few times, didn't work.

The brakes don't squeal all the time, they only squeal when soft coasting from very slow speeds (5 mph) like when your stuck in bad traffic and you have to keep braking the car after moving it a few metres.

Thing that sucks is there is a lot of traffic where I live so most of the time this is what happens and the squealing is driving me crazy.

Based on the above is there anything I can do or do I just have to put up with it?

 

What brand of brake pads? Aftermarket track pads tend to squeal, things like Pagid or PFC. Some of the low dusting street ceramics squeal too, depending upon driving habits (Hawk comes to mind). OEM in general are pretty quiet though.

 

Definitely like said above from semicycler, I would go with the stock ( if you don't track) OEM pads for quietness.

They are glazed up and not bedded in.....I bet if you did some hard braking maneuvers...where you active ABS...just tickle it the squeak goes away.

If a very remote area...very remote...no cars around...get up to highway speeds...70ishmph and hard brake to 30mph...do this 5 or so times...one right after the other....then drive a while to let the brake cool.

 

I agree that re-bedding brakes is a good bet to take care of the squeal. Similar experience with my former M3.

 

Are your rotors brand new also?

 

The rotors were replaced 5000 miles ago. I did some hard braking but not at 140km/h... maybe I need to go faster..

 

Sounds like you're babying them. Do as drums suggested. I have to take my wife's car out a few times a year and do this. She doesn't know how I fix it but is happy when I do.

 

What I've always done with new pads or rotors or both when replacing.
Perform 3-4 medium stops from 45mph. Slightly more aggressive than normal braking. You don’t need to come to a complete stop for each pass. This brings the brake rotors up to temperature so they are not exposed to sudden thermal shock.
Make 8-10 aggressive stops from 60mph down to 15mph. For this set of semi-stops, you want to be firm and aggressive, but not to the point where ABS activates and the wheels lock up. It’s important to note that you don’t come to a complete stop but rather a semi-stop (~15mph). Accelerate back up to 60mph as soon as you slowed down to your semi-stop.
The brake pads and brake rotors are extremely hot at this point and sitting on one point will imprint the pad material onto the surface unevenly. This can cause vibration and uneven braking.
You may notice that your brakes will start fading, and sometimes smoke, after the 6th or 7th pass. This fade will stabilize and will gradually recess once your brakes have cooled down to normal operating temperatures. Drive carefully as your brakes may feel softer for the next few minutes.
Try not to come to a complete stop and find a stretch of road where you can coast for 5-10 minutes, preferably without using your brakes.

 

I did a brake job on my new to me 08 with 47k miles last Monday. My buddy gave me a set of Porsche pads with some rubberized coating (paint) in a 4 Oz bottle. He said coat the outer pads with a medium coat, let dry then repeat. After install, bedded with the following procedure; Run up to 60mph apply brakes to about 90% force down to 10mph. Repeat 10 times. No squeal and good bite. The trick was to do the bed procedure quickly and not let the pads cool.

Just had my front pads and rotors changed by an indy. I am getting squicking and had the shop look at it. They could not find anything wrong and noted that two of the pads had yet to bed. They think the noise will go away once all four pads are bedded. May try the heaving breaking suggestions if it doesn't go away.

Porsche sports car models has brake squealing at low speeds, its a normal behavior,it has been described over owners Manuel as well. if the noise is too loud you can even remove the pads and clean it using suitable emery paper. it seems the pads are glazed and causing the noise
