That used to be the case for Nikon. But one-by-one, the lenses have been replaced with updated re-designs, with sharper optics, better coatings, AF-S focusing, VR, etc.

But the future is mirrorless. Sony's 42MP A7RII has better high-ISO performance and more accurate AF (thanks to hybrid AF on the sensor) than the any Canon or Nikon dSLR. The body and lenses also weigh a lot less. I'm in the process of dumping my Nikon rig.
