Question 997.2s - Muffler bypass or Center bypass?

Muffler bypass - straight pipes replace mufflers, center stock muffler and cats still present
Center bypass - straight pipes replace center muffler, stock mufflers and cats still present

Looking to see which one gets more votes. I live in the people's republic of Virginia so cats must remain. If you have further input, please post.

I would do the center muffler delete with a Gundo hack or similar. Not too loud but really sings at higher rpm and no drone. I was able to acquire the B&B center pipes for ~$600 new. The quality and fit was excellent.

I have no experience with the side muffler bypass so I can't comment.

I bought it from jegs but they are not listing it anymore for some reason. The link below is from Google search, about the same price I paid shipped to me.

Still looking for feedback on the muffler bypass option. I don't think the center bypass will be loud/aggressive enough. Pretty close to buying....

Billy Boat Exhaust has a few products for your vehicle. I've got a couple options for the 2009-2012 997.2. There are replacement exhaust mufflers and muffler bypass pipes. I don't have one of the new photos of the muffler, but below is the muffler bypass...FPOR-2353.

I'm STILL on the fence on muffler bypass vs center bypass.

Center bypass seems too quiet. Muffler seems nice, but I can't tell from videos how the droning is at what rpms. I've read that if you're just putting around town it's still pretty quiet. I ran muffler bypass on my 996 and loved it, but that was years ago when I was young....

I think I've watched every possible video on youtube for each option and keep flip-flopping.

I think the muffler bypass sounds to quiet if you ask me. If you're looking for nice sounding loud, go side muffler bypass. It also removes those heavy hybrid sounding mufflers. It is a porsche man...Not a hybrid! worst comes to worst you put it back. Good luck!

I got the Sharkwerks center muffler bypass on my 2012 GTS less than a month after I bought the car. The GTS comes standard with PSE (Porsche Sports Exhaust) as most here know and even in loud mode, the car was too quiet.
After the Sharkwerks install (done "professionally" at a Porsche stealership), the sound was for sure louder (with PSE on or off). Infact, it was louder after with PSE in quiet mode, than stock car was with PSE in loud mode.
By the way a fact, I didn't know at the time, is that if you have PSE, you can make the car much louder for free! Just disconnect solenoid power switch to vacuum actuators in the engine bay. (a quick search online will show you exactly where that is). After that, you'll have made the car louder since the ECU will have no control to modulate the PSE flaps. They will remain wide open all the time (even at start up which is impossible with solenoid connected and no other modifications). Had I known that at the time, would I have still gotten the Sharkwerks center muffler bypass? After nearly two years with the car, I can say that I'm glad I did.

Just know, you WILL loose refinement when you alter Porsche's exhaust system. In exchange, you'll get a louder note which I think is needed, especially for the 997.

Good Luck and enjoy.

The main reason I haven't pulled the trigger is I can't bring myself to spend $800 on a couple of pipes that probably should cost $100, and no one else seems to make the bypass pipes.

I've already passed on the center bypass, just too quiet.

don't do the muffler bypass. It'll be fun for the first month or so and after that it'll just get annoying. Do the center bypass with a set of sports headers and a tune - you'll love it.
