997.2 Sport Steering Wheel upgrade questions

I am considering upgrading from the standard 997.2 steering wheel to the Tecquipment Sport steering wheel with paddle shifter on my 997.2 pdk car. How big a job is this?

this would be the upgrade. https://www.suncoastparts.com/product/PDKPADDLE.html

Thanks

I did the swap myself, very straightforward using this procedure:

Pay particular attention to the steps at the 2:08 and 5:08 mark, will save you hassle.

Then follow the instructions on pages 263 and 26 of your owners manual when you reconnect the battery.

Karl.

I installed an alcantara sport steering wheel on my 997.2. It was very easy and took only about 30 minutes. I think I used the same video to learn how to do it.

Did you then go to the dealer to update the software?

If you unhook the battery before the install, it won't throw any codes so no need for a dealer to clear them. Don't know what you mean by software updates.

If you’re referring to adding a wheel with the sport / launch control lights on a MY2010-2012 PDK car, you may have to.

I’ve seen some people post that the lights worked after installing the wheel, and some (like me) where a trip to a shop (e.g. dealer) with PIWIS is required to code-enable the feature. I personally haven’t bothered to do that so far. But will get around to it eventually.

On my '11 C2S, I switched from the standard PDK wheel to a the sport PDK wheel and the sport/sport plus/launch control lights all work fine without a trip to the dealer.

Did you unhook the battery first ?

( I would do that anyway, to avoid having power to the airbag)

A belated response...I changed the steering wheel last month. It is pretty easy. It is helpful to have a friend to assist. I disconnected the battery for about an hour; then used a 5mm allen key in the hole at the bottom of wheel. Just push up till you release the spring clip and the airbag module pops out a little. Carefully pull it out. Have a friend hold it while you carefully disconnect the two plugs on the module and one at the base of the wheel. They have safety clips which you can release with a small screwdriver. Then carefully remove the ground clip off the module...it is likely to be tight, so be patient. Now use your T55 to remove the steering wheel bolt. Very carefully mark the position of the wheel, so you do not have to do this twice. The splines are fine...we had to do it twice. When putting it all back together, a little blue loctite on the bolt is probably a good idea. Push the module carefully back in, guiding the cable on the right into its slot until the module snaps in place. Torque wheel to 37lb ft.

The paddle shifters worked fine, but I ended up having to take it to the dealer to program the computer to recognize the wheel so that the readouts for sport/sport plus/launch control light up.

sport steering wheel

I changed my standard steering wheel to a paddle shifter sports steering wheel in less than a half hour. One caveat is to be careful reconnecting the wiring. It is delicate and easy to damage.

I have red leather interior but I went with the black wheel and airbag. A little less red is a good thing in my opinion.
