In the garage!
In the garage!
I took the plunge, gang. Picked up my new Arctic Silver C4S yesterday in Topeka, KS and drove it back to Chicago. Great deal at Sunflower Motors; small dealer, not exactly in 911 territory... black full leather, Navi, Sport Chrono, Bose, Sport Design 19", Power Seats. You gotta have power seats - being able to move a bit on a long cruise is important.
The weather cooperated perfectly - 70 degrees in Topeka, all the way home. I took I-70 to KC, I-35 up to Des Moines, and I-80/88 east to the homestead. Temps never dropped below 47 degrees.
The car also cooperated perfectly. Wow, what an experience. My jaw still hurts from grinning for 8+ hours. The ride was spectacular on smooth surfaces; pretty firm on bad roads (I-35 N needs a rework, badly). 571 miles, 8.5 hours, 71 mph average per PCM, 21.4 mpg (!) - and zero oil use. I'm observing the break-in regime, but I must admit that it was hard as H*ll to stay below 4500 rpm.
Navi worked like a charm. The Bose system won't win an IASCA competition, but it's a great compliment to the car. I never engaged Sport Chrono, but I certainly didn't need to - the throttle response is fantastic.
The car is quiet, smooth and unbelievably agile. I know that some of you aren't hot on AWD, but the "planted" feeling that you get from the all-wheel system is fantastic. My biggest problem was keeping it under 90 mph - this car just wants to go, go, go. Passing semis is a joy now - 70 to triple digits on a sixth gear roll-on, no drama. This car is everything it's claimed to be!
We are expecting a sleet / snow storm this evening, so the 997 is tucked in the (new) garage. I drove the 7er this morning (it wears 4 Dunlop Winter Sports) - and, man - did it feel SLOW.
All I can say is this: if you've ever wanted a 911, now is the time. Do not wait. Buy immediately! It was worth every penny. Check out the pic - yeah, I know the wing is up. I'm still reading the manual... <g>
Looking forward to talking with all of you in the near future,
-don

Don, great looking car, enjoy it in good health! FWIW, I think the break in guidelines are BS. Definitely check out sport mode asap. I'm driving mine w/o regard to "rules". Warm it up...and go!

Congrats, I can not believe you did not try out the sports chrono. I saved for 23 years to get mine and I am not disappointed. I should have bought it sooner. Enjoy... Being from Iowa (the midwest) you will have a car that is not at all common on the roads you will be driving...Be careful and take good care of her......
