Break-in is 2000 miles and in reality they only loosen up after about 10,000 miles. (How many miles has your friend's M3?) You can feel the change when that happens - the engine just seems to get rev happy. A tank of gas can make a HUGE difference - weighs about 130lbs. Bide your time!

i have a 2002 E46 M3 (35000 miles) and a 2006 997S (2500 miles).

There's no FREAKING WAY that the M3 is even anywhere remotely close to the speed of the 997S.

Having had an M3 I agree that it is slower than the 997S (which I don't own). Keep in mind that nomatter what engine they put in the new M3, it will be a heavy pig.

I have a '05 997 (stock...non-S) and my buddy just bought an '06 M3 (with an aftermarket exhaust). We've raced many times, with a launch, from a roll, etc. and I always seem to pull him. We've changed drivers and had the same result. If you're driving an S, something is not right.

doctorK....as far as breakin @ 1000 miles....maybe i jumped the gun thinking that break in was done.....so did your car open up significantly better after 1800 miles?
Break in is 2k miles. I would say try it again without the passengers. Eliminate as many variables as possible. If I can run dead even with a Gallardo from a rolling start until mid 3rd gear, you should be able to pull an M3. Do you have sport chrono? Are you bouncing off the rev limiter?

As you acquire milage your S will run much stronger, I know mine did. I assume you are using at least 91 octane gas from a busy service station.
I know one time I got a bad tank of gas and my 997 ran terrible. The S is a fabulously fast car...just hang in there.

I just sold me M3 and though it was quick an S should be able to beat it easily. I have seen 0-60 sec times of the S a full half second quicker. If its really bothering you, you may consider having it dyno'd.

Everything in your motor is still seating. Even 2000 miles is a bit early to see the full potential.

Even though the 997 S is not run in, that doesn't explain why the M3 had a fighting chance. Something is wrong, maybe a bad tank of gas as Le Chef has suggested.

and if I may add, when breaking in your porsche, drive it HARD. at 900 miles, i had my up to 5000 rpms, and at 1200 miles til now, I've red lined it everytime i took her out. However, be warned, make sure she's fully warmed up before you push her.

it's a sports car, don't baby it. burn rubber.
