Question Is my 997S slow?

Ok.....I need a bit of feedback on how fast your 997S is. I'm about 200 miles past the 1K break-in period and feel much more comfortable pushing the car to redline.

Now, here's the thing. I ran a friend's E46 M3 (only mod is an exhaust) and I'm DEAD even with the thing until about 70mph when I start to pull away slightly. I was under the impression that the Carrera S should easily start pulling away from the M3 from launch or even rolling start. To much disappointment, this was not the case despite several runs.

I contacted a local shop and the only thing they could tell me is to give my car a couple hundred more miles for the engine to "break in" properly and run the M3 again.

Can this car get that much faster after a couple hundred more miles? Or, do I need to get my car checked out? Or, is this normal?

Were you the only one in your car when running against M3? Stock to stock, M3 and 997 Non-S should be about the same. The 997S should be ahead. It's probly worth giving it another 500-1000 miles. Are the tires properly inflated and any heavy items in the trunk? Yours is a coupe right?

Could it be driver error? Maybe with a little more time in the seat (because your breakin is done you can push it haarder) you could match the magazine numbers.

thats odd, he could have a faster m3 and you have slower 997s. i'll race my friend's m3 and see for you, you know for testing purposes only! haha your car is nicer anyway, so dont worry.

no but seriously, could be the break in. how many miles on the m3?

I am assuming that you have do do a really hard launch (drop the clutch) to match magazine numbers. Even without a hard launch, the S should be able to pull on the M3 in first and second....but it doesn't. The M3 has about 40K on the clock.

Newtonold......run your car against an M3 and let me know how it goes. By the way, how many miles do you have on your car?

enjoy the time we have left. the upcoming M3 will walk the 997 easy. then can we say it's still not a Porsche for 2/3 of the price? i'm open-minded.

That is surprising... Unless you really trust the guy I'm going to suggest that he has unspoken mods. No way an M3 w/ exhaust can hang that close to a 997S. This is definitely stretching it but maybe he is a better driver than you and just slowed down when he was racing in your car.

This is believable... the new V8 will be a monster for sure.

I hope you're just joking. I know in straight line the new M5 and M6 can walk on 997S after about 100mph, but not easily. If your assumption is correct, then the new M3 will be faster than the M5 and 6??

My 997 did not seem to break in until around 1800 miles. Where did you get the idea of the 1000 mile break-in?

i'm not joking. i don't see any reason why this is not going to happen. don't know about the handling but BMW can't screw that part. now with a big V8 (previous M5 motor had 400hp & great engine) comfirmed in the M3 u tell me if i'm joking or not. it's just the fact we & Porsche need to face it.

The new M3 will beat the 997 or S hands down......I can't wait to drive one!

It might not look better on the outside but the interior will be better, it will sound better and it will be lets say, a little cheaper...than any 997..

Porsche beware!

The M3 that I'm speaking of definitely has nothing else done to it other than exhaust. The owner is a good friend, so I know for a fact that he has nothing else done to it.

doctorK....as far as breakin @ 1000 miles....maybe i jumped the gun thinking that break in was done.....so did your car open up significantly better after 1800 miles?
