I just wanted to post my experience in upgrading the steering wheel on my 2007 997.1 Targa 4 Tiptronic.
I purchased a used 2018 Macan multi-function paddle shift wheel and airbag. This was the non-heated version. My 997.1 steering wheel is the non-sport, non-multifunction with shift buttons.
It was a direct swap, the yellow multi pin connector from my Macan wheel plugged right in to my 997.1 column and bolted down securely with the center nut.
Best of all: The Horn and shift paddles worked perfectly. No need for the 997.2 steering column module (I bought one just in case and it will now be for sale). No programming or coding needed. Just bolt and go!
The new Macan wheel is great. MUCH better contoured grip, looks great with the interior and the paddle shift is worlds better than the stock buttons.
My new Macan wheel came with multi-function and of-course does not currently work. I am fine with that though since my 997 already has an aftermarket kenwood modern stereo. I know I can get the GPS wheel module to convert the LIN bus data to 997 but for $350 I will pass.
If anyone knows of a lesser expensive steering wheel button aftermarket module (SWI) that would work with my Kenwood stereo, please let me know. It would be nice to have the volume and phone buttons work.
Just thought I would share my experience with anyone else contemplating the switch.
@sik997tt: Did you ever get this resolved? I am now thinking of this similar upgrade (also have a Triptonic) so want to know how successful it was? I noticed the above post mentioned the "non-heating" steering wheel, did yours have heating (maybe that was the problem?)

@mjosco: did your car have PSM, did you get any PSM errors that you had to clear out? Did you have a steering wheel angle problem? I have a 2007 Turbo, and thinking about getting this wheel, but don't want to go through the steering wheel module/reprogramming if it's not necessary. I'm assuming the multi-function did not work? (I'm ok with that) -- Since you did it back in 2020, did you run into any other problems, or did you learn anything new about why yours worked?

psm warnings should resolve themselves after driving the car for a bit. to eliminate them all together, have your battery disconnected when removing the wheel.
the steering wheel angle problem normally only occurs when you have a brand new steering wheel module installed (while requires first time calibration). if a used unit is being installed, you shouldnt have this issue. a foxwell 510/530 can calibrate the steering wheel angle sensor without issues (many videos on youtube).
multiFunction with the 991.2+ 911/macan wheels will only work IF
- your steering wheel module is the .2 generation wheel (part number ends in 289.01 IIRC)
- have the aftermarket paul li/gpsAdapter installed
- have 'multifunction steering wheel' coding option set set to ON - via a foxwell510/530 unit. Durametric PRO will NOT access the coding options of the steering wheel unit.
horn wth the. newer steering wheels even with the older .1 steering wheel unit should still work provided

Yes, it seems like the newer wheels have their horn protocal enabled thru the multifunction option. not sure why but it is what it is.
- paddles should still work even with the older .1 steering wheel unit , i cant recall which coding setting but a cheap foxwell530 will allow you to tinker + get it to work.
Just wanted to share; so I purchased a 2019 Macan SW and after getting to the final stage to install I discovered that the main pin connector was not the same as my 997:1. I’m hoping somehow I can swap them out so the Macan SW can fit….would anyone have any 411 on if this is possible. I attached a 2019 Macan main PIN does not fit onto my 997.1

Did this ever get resolved? I'm in a nearly identical situation; bought a 2018 Macan SW for my manual, non-heat, non-MF 997.1 but the main pin doesn't fit. It's the same as in the picture from G-Flat.
Thanks!
