20K Service...is it worth it?

I have no problem spending the money to keep our cars running perfectly but I just feel checking fluid levels, and the condition of hoses and the underside of the car, etc. for $600 is simply not worth it. I'm due for new brakes and an oil change, both which I can do myself, but the rest of what they do...to me seems moot.

Any opinions?

Thanks in advance.

Doctor K is infamous around these parts
Case in point: I just bought a 2003 BMW 330CI as a daily driver. I bought the car through my Porsche dealer. I called BMW and asked what they would charge for a PPI/Safety inspection...they said $120.00. I took the car in to an indy shop for a long-overdo oil change. I had them do the inspection, fluid levels, hose condition, brake life remaining etc. etc. They did it free !
Red Blur I agree with you...600 is way too high!!

Just pay the money and have it done...
The replacement cabin filter is just a bit over $100 alone...
Your car most proably has some voluntary workshop actions that will be addressed as well.

The added bonus, the need service message will be reset!

Just do it, it's a small price to pay. There are a lot of service updates they look at as well, plus always pays to maintain a good relationship with the dealer if anything goes awry in the future. You need them in your corner, yes it's blackmail, it's also the cost of doing business in the big city

Do it just for the sake of having all of your car's records in order when you decied to sell it.

I don't know how you can buy a car like that and then even think of neglecting the service. Get it done for all the reasons listed above and piece of mind that comes with it.

If you are able to do it yourself, then do it and save all reciepts. Dealers charge way too much for some of these simple things.

I would have it done by dealer while in warranty and DIY afterwards. Check prices amongst dealers. They charge a little different most of time.

Why have them do it while under warranty?

Because if anything goes wrong while under warranty .. they could blame your DIY oil change.

There are laws to protect against that. Now if you don't do something properly that is another story.

Since I am a Porsche stock holder, I would say you should get it done twice.

Thanks for all the responses. I decided to get it done at the dealer after hearing all these valid reasons. But listen to what the dealer told me after I told them that their competing dealer was $100 less. They told me they include a "special" air conditioning cleaning process which cleans out the mold spores in my air cond. system. This is normally $170 to do this but they include it in their 20K service. Ummmm....needless to say I'm going to the other dealer. I don't need these service guys feeding me this BS.
