Navigation Retrofit

Thinking about getting a navi into my PCM. Anyone have any advice? Cost? Best avenue to pursue? Also looking to install the telephone module. TIA

I would not let anyone but a Porsche mechanic get anywhere near my PCM .
Both can be retrofitted, but it will not be cheap.
The nav will be at least twice the cost of the factory install .

At this point, you may want to consider a stand alone aftermarket unit with the added benefit that it can be used in your other cars as well.

Good luck.

I did it. My dealer gave me parts at employee cost. I'll have to look through my records for the receipt, but it came out to be almost the same price as from the factory. I'll get back to you on the cost. I seem to remember it being around $3K. That being said, Porsche navigation sucks. Handheld GPS have more data than Porsche. I live in one of the largest cities in NC and only the large streets and highways are depicted on the maps. I've even loaded the updated data but still it shows no residential streets in my city. I did use it in Raleigh once and Atlanta once and it worked great. I'm not sure it was worth the $. My friend bought an Audi A3. It's navigation is outstanding. The maps are much more details and the resolution on the screen is a lot better.

My factory nav. cost ~ $ 2000 as I recall .

Can you tell me where you got the updated data, and how it was loaded ?
Thanks.

I spoke to an aftermarket specialist in torrance today. He recomended installing this new Alpine headunit that adds state of the art Navi, Ipod hook up, Sirius radio and a 40% boost in amplified sound. He had done the job on one 997 before and said it was outstanding. That would my choice if the stock navi wasn't already installed in mine.

Since I bought my Nav, a new tech equipment brochure stated there was an update to the maps. I went to the dealer and he had the part in stock. We took the new disc and put it in my car. Even with the new disc I couldn't get map data for where I live.

I think it doesnt worth that much money. Why dont you get something aftermarket like Garmin or a PDA with onboad GPS receiver or a bluetooth receiver and use Navigon/TomTom.

I agree with Dan98. If you don't have the Nav from factory, it would make more sense to get something aftermarket. I like the Tomtom HDD-based Nav.

If you plan on doing the factory phone and nav, just make sure you do them at the same time. The fiber optic harness needs to be changed for each unit. Phone fiber optic inside and nav fiber optic in front trunk area. They both need to be programed with PIWIS. Not a cheap installation, but keeps the car stock and under warranty. I've installed quite a few with no complaints.

If you do add a nav unit into your PCM, make sure you do it right and get the Cayenne's PCM so you can also have Sat Radio....

Wait!!

Wait, Wait, Wait!!!
Welll, that's what you'll need to do. I have been waiting since September for the optical cables to come in . The unit has been at the dealer for months but no cables.

So place your order and ...uh... wait

Surprised to hear that. I have installed a few since September and have not had any problem getting the kits with the correct optic cables. There are quite a few different cables due to different options. C4,C2, C/D, external amp, Nav, phone. All were available when I ordered them at the time.

The Racer's Group in Sonoma, CA just stripped 4 new Carreras recently and are selling all interior parts including Nav units. Here's the link to their ad:

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/pts/267928416.html

I was quoted $1500 for trunk and in-dash unit. May be worth checking out.
