997 TT vs 997 GT3
997 TT vs 997 GT3
I may be trading my GT3 in next month...I said maybe. I really can't see where the 997 GT3 is a huge improvement over my 996 GT3...better in some aspects perhaps PASM etc., but worse in others... probable sunroof and that god awful Alacantra steering wheel. Wait until you see the Alacantra after 1 year of use.
The TT does interest me because of the jump in HP from my old 2001 TT, plus it is better looking. Of course there is a substantial price difference between the GT3 and the TT.
If I could order a stripped TT, A/C, GT3 seats, and PCCBs only, I would be a happy camper, but I guess thats not an option. I don't need or want heated and electric seats, power windows, sport chrono etc, etc, ad naseum. I want a 2900 pound car that will be competitive with or beat the Z06. WTF
I probably will never track my new car (If I get one). I'm mainly interested in 40-120 times and throttle response. I haven't even though about the Viper, but maybe thats where I should start looking. After 8 Porsches I'm a little tired of looking as the same dash layout over these past years.
Not to mention the costs of mods. $12,000 supercharges, 15,000 for exotic muffles. $35,000+ RUF and Manthey motors. If I put that kind of money in a Z06 or Viper there would not be a Porsche in the country that could stay with me, and I would be money ahead.
Flame away!

Howzit doc
Hi Doc K,
How are you doing? Hopes all well
You switched from your 997 sooo quick.
Your ready to switch again.
Well, heres the question, when you test drive these two, which one makes your heart beat faster.....after you know that, the fun part, options.
Goodluck whichever way you go. I like them all.
No likey the Targa ?

My 997 was a non-S. When I saw the GT3 become available I had to have it, and I would do it again. From the write-ups I have read on the 997 GT3 and the TT I might be interested.. However for me to trade my GT3 as I have modded it the 997 will have to be convincingly better than what I have now. Personally I am doubtful but I'll drive both. At my age my next car will be one the the last car purchases I'll make. I have never owned a Targa.
Thanks for remembering

I would suggest waiting for the GT2 ... since you are looking for a stripped down and fast porsche. Although, if quarter miles are your main thing .. a turbo/super TT or Z06 is probably more up your alley.
I'm thinking the same question too Doc.
The GT3 I am ordering Monday is about the same price as a base Turbo(PCCBS). So it got me thinking maybe i should get a Turbo...
I kinda need the 4 seats and 480 Hp would make me really happy but from what i read the GT3 is more the 'drivers' car.
The Turbo's looks are growing on me and with some rims it would look menacing.
But see thats the problem and solution...a GT3 out the box with PCCB's and a couple of options is base Turbo price. The only aftermarket thing i maybe would add is an exhaust. Whereas the Turbo is begging for upgrades like wheels, lowering , exhaust ect. So the GT3 is really the bargain supercar and from what i heard is a whole lot funner.

The GT3 is indeed more of a "drivers" car IMHO, it gets you involved the minute you pull out of your driveway. My GT3 has been the best driving car I have ever owned. It keeps you on your toes and is not too forgiving if you make a mistake. Mine get driven almost daily, both city and freeway and it more than holds its own in any situation. I never said I wanted a track car, I said I wanted a car that would be more than competitive with the Z06, especially from 40+ up. Never sat in a GT2-they are hard to come by in my neck of the woods. I'll keep my eyes open though.

Bottom line, you want the TT. If you decide on the Z06 be prepared to be treated like the guy with the Cobalt when it comes time for service.....which will be sooner than you hoped.
I did have a 2004 base Corvette coupe with A/T. It was okay for routine driving around town and at semi-legal freeway speeds. The car seemed "bulky" and required a completely different mind-set to negotiate the few twisties I have around my home. I'm planning to stay with Porsche; I'm just not sure of which one. I do have a fear that as soon as I buy the 997 GT3, Porsche will decide to offer a 4.0 flat 8 that produces 490 HP+, and put it in a car that weighs 2800 lbs. My dealer doesn't have a clue.
Since the GT2 is a few years away, how about the 997TT with the RWD conversion similar to the 996TT? It would make the 997 much more involving to drive especially if it were lightly optioned and properly modded. Just a thought...
